Golf outing to be held in honor of late student

Eagle Crest Golf Club is holding a golf outing on June 20 in remembrance of a former Eastern student who died in a car accident. On October 12, 2013, Henry Vance Davis II, who came to Eastern in 2006 to study computer science, was killed in an accident when he fell from a vehicle that his friend was driving.

Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners recognizes Susan Martin

Eastern Michigan University’s President of seven years, Susan Martin, was recognized at the Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners’ regular meeting on Wednesday for her public service. Felicia Brabec, Chair of the Board of Commissioners, said in a statement she was honored to present Martin with the proclamation which said Martin led Eastern through an “era of tremendous growth and achievement.” “Her accomplishments and contributions to our youth, throughout her career and within this community, are phenomenal,” Brabec said in a statement.



Melody Werner named Title IX Coordinator

Melody A. Werner has been appointed to the newly established Title IX Coordinator position. She will begin June 19. In a campus-wide email, Calvin Phillips, Associate Vice President, Student Affairs at EMU, said Werner will “develop initiatives, deliver education and training, and coordinate awareness of gender equity and sex discrimination across the University.” She will also “oversee and coordinate investigations, monitor the campus climate, identify opportunities for improvement, and ensure that the University has adequate grievance procedures for resolving complaints under Title IX,” according to the email. The position was established in fall 2014.

Reception held for new COE dean

Eastern Michigan University’s College of Education held a reception for its new dean, Micheal Sayler, on Wednesday in Porter. Sayler said Eastern Michigan University is a wonderful place. “I started Monday, and it feels like home already,” Sayler said.


William Roush gives lecture on cancer research project

Dr. William Roush, of the Florida-based Scripps Research Institute, gave the 3rd yearly lecture of this semester's Regent Beth Fitzsimmons Lecture Series, Thursday. The current project Roush and his team has spent 4 years on is intended to be used to treat breast cancer, glioblastoma and melanoma.

Joel Schoenhals named Foreign Expert in music

China named an Eastern Michigan professor as its first Foreign Expert in music. Joel Schoehals is an EMU professor of piano and will be based at Central China Normal University in Wuhan, China. Schoenhals was selected for the program, which is sponsored by the Chinese government, through an extensive, national search. “I first came to China in 2009 for concerts and master classes, and have returned each year as opportunities and the need for instruction in China has increased,” Schoenhals said in a press release. The Foreign Expert program is a three year commitment.





Volunteers clean up downtown during Ypsi P.R.I.D.E Day

Local residents participated in the 21st annual Ypsi P.R.I.D.E Day Saturday morning. Volunteers at the event worked in the downtown Ypsilanti area to help gather litter, pull up weeds and plant new flowers. People Restoring Image and Developing the Environment is a project from the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti Regional Chamber.

Construction still open after worker dies

The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) has not shut down construction at the historic Thompson Block building in Ypsilanti after a worker died Monday.  However, a state review of safety measures is underway.

EMU professor named chair of State Historic Preservation Review Board

An Eastern Michigan University professor has been selected by Gov. Rick Snyder to help lead efforts to preserve Michigan’s history. Ted Ligibel, a historic preservationist at EMU, was named the chair of the State Historic Preservation Review Board.  Ligibel teaches geography and geology classes and is director of the Historic Preservation program.
