MAGIC and Unmasked host discussion on human trafficking

Eastern Michigan University’s Mentorship Access Guidance in College and Unmasked: Looking Beneath the Surface Programs held a video and discussion night on Thursday in Marshall. Members from both programs discussed human trafficking, prostitution, homelessness and foster care with the fourteen attendees.

Pinky Promise invited Elder Rev. Cheryl Crawford Sangster, Pastor Timothy Alden and Rev. David Bullock to speak about the Proverbs 31 woman, the virtuous woman, Friday afternoon in McKenny Hall. Gabrielle Burgess-Smith, public relations major and Pinky Promise president, said the organization is a women’s Christian organization. “We strive for purity and multiple facets for God with an emphasis [on] no sex until marriage,” Burgess-Smith said. Lorraine McKnight, senior career coach in the University Center for Advising and Counseling said she believes it is important to remind people of their value to God in terms of how society sees us.  “[This event] was very good,” McKnight said.


Progressives at EMU hold protest march for free tuition, elimination of student loans and $15 minimum wage

A new student organization, Progressives at EMU, held a protest march through campus, Thursday afternoon. "We're here as part of Million Student March that's happening across the nation,” Kira Dallaire, a graduate student in special education for students with learning disabilities, said.



The paneled discussion focused on the experience of being a minority in the military.

Veterans talk about experience as minorities in the army

The Talk Culture Series hosted the Life as a Minority Veteran paneled discussion to discuss life in the military Tuesday evening in the Student Center. The panel featured a White woman, a black male, an Asian male and two Native American males.

Student wins $750 scholarship at black male showcase

Jimmy Purifoy recieved a $750 scholarship at Eastern Michigan University's chapter of The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People held I Am: The Black Male Showcase Sunday evening in the Student Center Ballroom. "This showcase aims to celebrate and acknowledge our black men in a positive light and eliminate stereotypes that are often associated with black men,” the chapter said in the event description. The ballroom was filled with chairs, a projector screen and a runway that dominated the middle of the room.

Attempted kidnapping at Peninsular Place

There was a kidnapping attempt at 6:40 p.m., Monday, at the Peninsular Place. Police said they came across two men in a Penn Place stairwell, interrupting a kidnapping and a robbery in progress. According to a press release from the Ypsilanti Police department, there were three suspects.


Student reflects on winning free tuition

Like many Eastern Michigan University freshmen, Alex Theisen will be taking a full load of classes next year. He and his classmates will trudge across campus, grind through their daily classes, and further their progress toward a degree.

ASA holds second-annual African Culture Show

Eastern Michigan University’s African Student Association held its second-annual African Culture Show: Taking Back Africa, Thursday in Pease Auditorium. “The purpose was for more awareness about African culture and bringing African culture to Eastern,” said Vice President of ASA, Pascaline Shuneh. About 60 students attended and were welcomed to Pease by the sounds of African music.

Monday, Nov. 9 Starting Monday, Eastern Michigan University's Native Feminism class is going to be doing a presentation called Contemporary Natives: Thriving Despite North America Display on the Student Center lower level.


EMU professor talks time spent in navy

In honors of Veterans Day, Nov. 11, The Eastern Echo spoke with Jesse Kauffman, an Eastern Michigan University assistant professor in the history and philosophy department. Kauffman, originally from the suburbs of Los Angeles, served in the Navy for four years, 1993-1997.
