Opinion: Tips to feel comfortable and stylish this summer

·

Summer can be a hard season to dress for, but there are a few reliable ways to dress for sweltering heat and humidity and still look cute.   Summer can be a hard season to dress for, but there are a few reliable ways to dress for sweltering heat and humidity. This article is also for those who break out in hives just thinking about dressing in the heatwave.Waking up sweating and irritated from a bad night’s sleep in the heat is far from the ‘hot girl summer' many of us had in mind, but there are plenty of ways to get your entire wardrobe ready for warm weather. Wear light-colored clothing. The sun's rays will be reflected rather than absorbed by dresses and button-down shirts in light colors and whites. It is typical for workwear to come in dark colors such as black and navy. Consider white linen blazers, seersucker suits, or light blue button-up shirts for summer instead. It's therefore recommended that you wear light colors during summer classes. Choose breathable fabrics. While breathable fabrics may not matter throughout the year, you'll definitely notice the difference during the summer when compared to fabrics that trap moisture. Make sure your clothing is made with linen, cotton, or silk, not synthetics, as synthetic fabrics tend not to be breathable. Dress in layers. Your summer fashion vibe will be influenced by layering if you're an EMU student with air conditioning in most buildings. When you need to transition from a hot walk to a cold class, a cotton cardigan is the perfect choice. Stay away from tight clothing. When it comes to staying cool in the summer, you should wear loose-fitting clothing. Dress in cropped, wide-leg pants, loose shirts, oversize blouses, and dresses and skirts with plenty of room to move. Try a one-piece garment. Separates can get very warm in the summer. Rather than a two-piece, opt for a one-piece, such as a jumpsuit or a wrap dress. Dressing for summer can feel overwhelming, especially if you don't go to the beach and just attend classes, but you can manage it. Remember, dressing for classes is different from dressing for the beach.

Katie's Craft Corner: Homemade aprons

·

When the holidays roll around, everyone begins to bake their annual favorites: pies, cookies, turkey and more, particularly for parties and family gatherings. Unfortunately for the klutzes among us, this means getting flour, chocolate and unknown mystery stains all over our nice clothes – a problem that’s been solved for ages with the humble apron.

The Food Scoop: Bake fierce gingersnaps

·

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, and unlike Christmas, I don’t have to worry about finding the perfect present for anyone. Without the pressure of romance, or the lack thereof, it’s much less stressful than Valentine’s Day. For Thanksgiving, all I have to do is bake a lot of desserts: apple pie, pumpkin pie, cheesecake and my favorite, gingersnaps.

Learn to cook tasty pumpkin soup

·

Planning a Thanksgiving dinner takes a lot of work and time. Many people want to keep the Thanksgiving dinner spread traditional. This year my family and I are trying a new dish that keeps the traditional flavors in a different way – we’re adding pumpkin soup with crumbled bacon and toasted pumpkin seeds.

Katie's Craft Corner: Ball Mason Jars

·

In the past few years, Ball Mason jars have been elevated from a humble jelly container to the hottest thing in crafts and decorating. No longer just for Grandma’s famous bread and butter pickles, Mason jars are used for holding everything from flowers to cocktails, painted a rainbow of colors and wrapped in everything from lace to twine.

Each year families engage in many holiday traditions that are as unique as the people within them. One such largely practiced tradition is opening day of hunting season, which went into full force on Friday, Nov. 15.

Advice on staying organized as semester winds down

·

This point in the semester can make or break a grade. Staying on top of things can be much less stressful if you stay organized. Final exams and term papers are almost a month away, too close for comfort if you ask me. The good news is organizing and preparing for finals is something you can start doing now.

KATIE’S CRAFT CORNER: Quilting

·

Quilting, sewing pieces of colorful patchwork squares together to make a thick blanket, has gotten a, let’s say, “old-fashioned” reputation in recent times. A quick trip to upscale stores such as Pottery Barn and Anthropologie show that quilts themselves are more popular than ever.

Reporter seeks exciting, unique styles

·

I am beginning to embark on a journey to spotlight some of Eastern Michigan University’s students’ fashion styles for the fall, ranging from trendy and kooky to vintage inspired and punk. The bottom line is that no style is exempt from being showcased.

Katie's Craft Corner: Clay jewelry

·

Ever since I was a little kid, I have been enchanted by modeling clay. I’ve always enjoyed working with the soft, squeezable texture and the possibility to make anything with a few shapes. A quick glance at the jewelry racks at stores like Icing and Claire’s reveals that cute and soft clay-molded critters and shapes are not just for preschoolers.

How to survive dreaded group projects

·

Class assignments that involve working in groups feel like torture to college students. The reason is no one wants to work with other people who do not work. They’d rather just work by themselves instead.

Homemade pizza isn't as complicated as it seems

·

I’m a sucker for home-cooked meals, especially ones that are made by someone other than me. Home-cooked pizza is an especially delightful surprise, one sprung on me recently while visiting my friend Adam.
