Letters to the Editor

The Eastern Echo

A Socialist point of view on Haiti

Dear Mr. Hendricks, I have little interest in a petty squabble over ideology with a student of political science.

Letter: EMU athletics aren't what they once were

As an alumnus, former walk-on football player and sports editor of The Eastern Echo, I am almost speechless when looking at the state of the Eastern Michigan University athletic department as it pertains to the revenue sports of football and basketball.

Letter: EMU needs to raise standards

Dear EMU community, We, Students for an Ethical and Participatory Education (SEPE), are writing you because of our mutual interest in Eastern Michigan University’s values: integrity, respect, education and relationships.

Letter: Proposed weapon legislation good for colleges

·

In the Echo’s recent article on the proposed legislation to allow the carrying of weapons on campus, a variety of critics voiced their concerns. As a supporter of this bill, I would like to address those points. First, to Police Chief O’Dell, who said, “Say you have a situation where officers are pulling up and everyone has guns. There’s no way of telling who the bad guys are.”

Letter: EMU could do without football

·

Eastern Michigan University has about a $1.8 million yearly football budget. We have 99 men on the roster, yet only 40-50 will see any play time. This means we spend about $13,000 per player this year or $26,000 per player who will see play time this year. EMU has only won 22 games in the past seven years. This is an average of 2.75 wins a season, meaning it costs us about $645,000 per win.

Letter: Stop buying what sex sells

·

My attention was brought to something very disturbing the other day. The Eastern Michigan University hockey team has new posters for the 2009-2010 season. Rather than displaying pictures of the team or coaches, they depict our female classmates in nothing more than hockey jerseys and heels.
