With the game well out of reach Saturday late in the fourth quarter of a 45-17 defeat by Michigan, Eastern Michigan fifth-year senior quarterback Andy Schmitt wasn’t able to finish after an apparent right leg injury.

When I was in high school, I hated pep rallies and always skipped them. I never understood why schools made it mandatory to sit on a hard bench and hear about football, a sport I could never follow. If anything, it seems we would be required to have rallies for baseball teams since it’s supposedly America’s favorite pastime, not that I like the sport any better.

Northwestern was efficient and explosive in rolling up a 21-3 halftime lead over Eastern Michigan. Then it meandered through a listless second half and needed a 49-yard field goal from Stefan Demos with six seconds left to pull out a 27-24 victory.

U-M, EMU football game ticket giveaway Wednesday

The first 500 students, faculty or staff to arrive at the Convocation Center for Eastern Michigan’s volleyball match against No. 7 ranked Michigan at 7 p.m. Wednesday (gates open at 6) will get a free ticket to see the Eagles’ football team play Michigan on Sept. 19 at Michigan Stadium.

On Aug. 29, the Detroit Free Press published an article in which both former and current U-M players alleged coach Rich Rodriguez and his staff forced the student-athletes to practice too long and too hard.
