EMU downs Ball State in last road game of regular season

The Eastern Michigan University men’s basketball team traveled to Muncie, Ind. and avenged an early season loss against Ball State by defeating the Cardinals 67-60 in their second matchup of the season. With the win, the Eagles finish the regular season 4-9 on the road, but EMU head coach Rob Murphy views this win as a big one moving forward, despite Ball State’s abysmal 2-15 conference record. “I thought tonight was a very good road win for us,” Murphy said.

This is the largest margin of victory the Eagles have achieved since 2004 and the biggest win in a Mid-American Conference tournament since 1997. The Eagles finished the first half with a leading score of 31-16; averaging 44.8 in field goal percentage, 11.1 percent from behind the arc, and 100 percent from the free throw.

There is a saying in sports that no lead is safe until the clock hits zero, and the Eastern Michigan men’s basketball team provided the perfect example for that old adage Saturday with an 82-81 defeat in overtime on the road at Miami, Ohio The Eagles’ took a comfortable 49-30 lead into halftime, but coming out of the half the game turned into a back-and-forth affair between EMU (11-4, 0-2 MAC) and the host Redhawks of Miami (6-9, 1-1 MAC). Miami tied the score at 78 in the end of regulation and was able to shutdown EMU in overtime for the one point win. “Anytime you are in situations like this, you have to step up and make plays,” EMU coach Rob Murphy said.
