Women in Journalism Project: Covering the COVID-19 pandemic
Eastern Michigan University Journalism Professor You Li found herself reflecting on the difficulties of covering COVID-19 while she was visiting her critically ill mother in China at the height of the pandemic. Returning home to Ypsilanti, Li, who earned her doctorate degree in journalism at the University of Missouri-Columbia, launched a research project designed to document the contributions and sacrifices of women reporters who covered the pandemic. Her work is now part of the Oral History Project at Eastern Michigan University. Collaborating with The Eastern Echo, and Podcast Editor Alex Kreps, she also created this podcast series, featuring interviews with some of the 33 women journalists from 25 countries and regions who were part of the project. The journalists were identified with the assistance of the Coalition for Women in Journalism.
