Women's basketball falls at Akron, 70-53 in 2024 road finale

Eastern Michigan University's women’s basketball team dropped their third consecutive game against Akron University 70-53 Wednesday night to fall to 2-26 (1-17 Mid-American Conference) on the season.

The game started back and forth as Eastern Michigan held the early lead 8-6 the first four and a half minutes. The first quarter ended with the Akron Zips being up 15-13. Even in the second quarter, it was still back and forth as EMU could take a 29-26 lead with 2:16 to play. From that point, the Eagles did not score for the rest of the half as they trailed 32-29 heading into the locker room.

After the break, the wheels started falling off for the Green and White. The Zips started the half on a 7-0 run and kept growing the lead. They led by as many as 17 when they had a 50-33 with 3:09 to play in the quarter.

The Zips outscored the Eagles 15-13 in the fourth quarter, but they did most of the damage in the third quarter. The Zips outscored the Eagles in all four quarters to get their 10th win of the season.

Sisi Eleko led EMU from Montreal, Quebec, and Olivia Smith, hailing from Fort Wayne, Indiana, had 21 and 16 points to combine for 37 out of Eastern’s 53 points. Eleko also had 11 rebounds and two steals to improve her scoring performance. Mackenzie Amalia from Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, had her second consecutive game with three steals.

Eastern Michigan shot just 33% as a team. With just one game left on the season, they are shooting 38%.

Up next, Eastern Michigan will conclude the 2024-2025 season when it returns to the George Gervin GameAbove Center on Saturday, March 8, to host Bowling Green. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. ET. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and can be listened to on WEMU 89.1 FM.
