On Wednesday night, the Eastern Michigan University Women’s Basketball team lost their 15th consecutive game against the Miami University Redhawks, 68-45. This loss dropped the team to 1-21 on the season and 0-11 in Mid-American Conference play.
The contest was held on the official celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day. Still, since the Eagles were away for the day, they had their celebration this past Saturday, February 2, at the George Gervin GameAbove Center.
Despite the loss, the game saw Eastern Michigan get an early lead. They led by as many as seven points in the first quarter, 11-4, before things started to go the other way for the Eagles. The first quarter finished with Eastern Michigan leading 16-14.
By the second quarter, things started to go the other way for EMU. Miami went on an 8-0 run to start the second quarter, outscoring Eastern for 10 minutes, 16-8. The Red Hawks entered the locker room with a 30-24 advantage over Eastern Michigan.
In the third quarter, Miami blew the game open and out of reach for Eastern Michigan. They started the second half on an 11-0 run and went up by 17 points. From that point, Miami grew its lead to 55-34 after 30 minutes of basketball.
From there, the game remained around the same advantage for the remainder of the play. The RedHawks would improve to 13-8 on the season and 6-5 in MAC play.
Eastern did not have anyone score more than nine points individually. From Wayne, Ohio, Brooklyn Thrash collected ten rebounds in the contest, the first time she has had double-digit rebounds in a game this season. Thrash also had two steals, which led the Eagles on defense.
Olivia Westphal from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, had two blocks for the Eagles, her third game this season with multiple blocks. The Eagles went on to make eight three-pointers as a group.
The Eagles scored 13 second-chance points as a team, more than Miami’s nine points in this category.
Next, Eastern Michigan will stay on the road and step out of conference play for one more game. On Saturday, February 8, they will travel to Atlanta to take on the Georgia State Panthers in the Annual MAC-Sun Belt Challenge. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m., and the game will be streamed on ESPN+.
