What's the Move? Jan. 14-20

From fitness opportunities to research tips, here is an eagle-eye view of events happening on and around the Eastern Michigan University campus this week.

Honors Undergraduate Research Workshop - Jan. 14

Scheduled from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14, at the Honors College, 511 Forest Ave., this workshop is designed to help students get started in research. Attendance at one of these workshops is required for all honors pathway graduates. A faculty fellow leads the workshop, which points students toward resources available at Eastern. Students also receive tips and instruction on developing research topics. Register for the workshop through the Honors College calendar page.

Intro to Bounce and Rebounding - Jan. 15

Considering a new exercise routine? Try the mini trampoline at the Mix Fitness Studios, 306 N. River St. Learn the jump workout routines for just $1 during this introduction to bounce class, which runs from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15.

Women’s Basketball vs. Buffalo - Jan. 15

Cheer on the Eagles as the women's basketball team faces the Buffalo Bulls at the George Gervin GameAbove Center from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15. Regular admission is $5; courtside seats are available at $25 each. Free admission is available to current students with a valid EMU ID. 

Star Lecture: James Tatum (‘14) - Jan. 16

The Honors College invites everyone to hear James Tatum review “Financial Wellness: What Every College Student Should Know!” Tatum is an EMU alumnus who graduated in 2014. The lecture is approved for Learning Beyond the Classroom credit and will be held in 124 Sill Hall from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 16.

Chair Yoga with Melanie Herron - Jan. 17

Participate in a space designed for relaxing the mind and body while also experiencing the benefits of chair yoga. Geared toward seniors and adults, the class will be conducted seated and standing alongside a chair. The class will be held at the Superior Township branch of the Ypsilanti District Library at 1900 N. Harris Road from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 17.

4th Annual Ypsilanti Bourbon Fest (21+) - Jan. 18

Pop out to Ypsilanti’s 4th Bourbon Festival at the Michigan Firehouse Museum from 4 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18. This event, limited to those of legal drinking age, will have food trucks, live music, vendors, 100-plus whiskeys and hand-crafted cocktails. General admission is $65. Purchase tickets through the event's website. Proceeds from the event benefit the Friends of the River nonprofit group.

Self-Defense Workshop for Women - Jan. 19

Join Mix Fitness Studios and course instructor Heidi Sproull for a three-hour session on self-defense in dangerous situations. This workshop will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19. Purchase tickets and sign up on the studio's calendar pages.

MLK Jr. Walk to Freedom - Jan. 20

Walk with the whole Ypsilanti community from the Martin Luther King Jr. statue on Eastern's campus, located between Boone and Welch halls, to the Student Center. The walk is from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 20 and is approved for Learning Beyond the Classroom credit. Because of the celebration of MLK Day, the university has cancelled all Monday classes. Students are instead encouraged to attend one of the many events organized on campus to honor and remember the late civil rights leader.

MLK Jr. Book Signing with Dr. Mary Frances Berry - Jan. 20

Eastern invites everyone to a book signing with Dr. Mary Frances Berry, who is speaking on campus for the Martin Luther King Day events. The book signing is free and will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20 in room 310A of the Student Center on campus. Free books will be handed out as long as supplies last.

Berry is also the keynote speaker for the MLK Day President's Luncheon, scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday in the Student Center Ballroom. WXYZ-TV Anchor Chuck Stokes is the emcee for the event. A ticket purchase is required for the luncheon. Purchase tickets through the university's ticket portal.
