Track and Field sets new records in first meet of season

The Eastern Michigan University track and field programs opened its 2025 indoor season on Jan. 11 with personal bests across the board in a meet in which 10 schools and clubs participated.

University of Michigan, Michigan State University, and University of Dayton were among the schools that participated with EMU. Although 10 schools participated, there were no team scores in the meeting.

A total of 40 personal bests were established by EMU in the meet, including 15 on the women’s side and 25 on the men’s.

Although many personal bests were set, one record breaker will be cemented in EMU history. Josephine Oloye (Iwaro-Oka, Nigeria/Geomi Secondary School/Tayelolu Memorial) was six seconds ahead of Eastern Michigan’s other finisher, Qyrah Spann-Pierre (Coral Springs, Florida/Taravella), who finished with a 44.90 clip.

The sophomore set the school record in the 300-meter dash at 38.05, which tied for first place with an athlete from the University of Guelph. There were 19 finishers in the race, all under 50 seconds.

Although Oloye was the most significant, many other records were set in different events in the meet. Personal bests were put on the women’s 60, 300 (Oloye’s school record), 600, 800, one-mile, and 3000. Meanwhile, the men’s side on the track had personal bests in the 60-meter hurdle prelims and finals, the 200, 300, 600, 800, one mile, and the 3000.

Meanwhile, many impressive results were also compiled for EMU in the field. On the women’s side of the field, they set personal bests in the long jump, the shot put, and the weight throw. The men had no PRs in the field, but Formula Thompson took a first-place finish in the triple jump, with a 15.07m best and a 49-05.50 overall.

This was the Eagles' first meet of 2025, but there are many more meets to follow. Eastern Michigan is next in action at the Bob Parks Memorial, which they host on January 25th. It is an all-day meet that will take place at Bowen Fieldhouse in Ypsilanti.

The meet is the only home meet during the regular season of meets. They will also host the MAC Indoor championships for the second consecutive year on February 28 and March 1.
