Eastern Michigan tennis dominates in season opener

The Eastern Michigan University tennis team opened its 2025 dual season in commanding fashion with decisive victories against Ferris State University on Jan. 18 at the Chippewa Club in Ypsilanti.

The Eagles swept the Bulldogs with a 7-0 win in the opening match, followed by a 4-0 triumph in the second dual. These wins marked an impressive start to the season, setting a strong foundation for the team’s goals.

The day began with Eastern securing the doubles point in the opening match. The No. 1 pairing of Sabina Brichackova (Cheb, Czechia/Gymazium Jana Blahoslava) and Prerna Vichare (Mumbai, India/Narsee Monjee College of Commerce & Economics) showcased their skill with a dominant 6-1 victory, while the No. 2 team of Viki Hazmukova (Skvorec, Czechia/Skoly Brezova) and Marta Komar (Inowroclaw, Poland/Sopocka (Sopot) Tennis Academy/Wayne State) clinched the doubles point with a hard-fought 6-4 win. The singles matches followed suit, with all six Eagles earning straight-set victories. Freshman Lara Diaz Zayas (Mar de Ajo, Argentina/SEADEA) delivered an emphatic 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles, and Hazmukova clinched the dual with a 6-1, 7-5 victory at No. 2 singles.

In the second dual, the Eagles continued their momentum. The doubles point was again secured with commanding wins at the No. 1 and 2 positions. In singles, Vichare set the tone with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 2, while Hazmukova and Diaz Zayas followed with victories to seal the sweep. The consistent performance across the roster highlighted the team’s depth and readiness for the season ahead.

The victories were also significant milestones for several players. Hazmukova, a freshman, played a pivotal role, contributing to the clinching points in both doubles and singles across the two matches. Diaz Zayas, another freshman, earned her first career clinch in the second dual. Meanwhile, veterans like Brichackova and Vichare continued to climb the program’s doubles wins leaderboard, further cementing their legacies within Eastern’s tennis history.

These wins extended Eastern Michigan’s dominance over Ferris State, improving the Eagles’ record to 7-0 all-time against the Bulldogs. The team’s strong home performance also improved their record in sweeps and season openers, demonstrating a blend of experience and fresh talent that bodes well for the remainder of the year.

Looking ahead, the Eagles will take their momentum on the road with matches against the University of Cincinnati and the University of Dayton. These contests will provide valuable opportunities for the team to test its mettle against strong opponents and build on its early success. The team’s next matches are scheduled for Jan. 25 and 26, as it looks to continue its promising start to the 2025 season.
