ParkEMU opens for Winter 2025 parking pass purchases

It's that time of year to purchase parking permits for the Winter 2025 semester. Parking permits will be available for purchase on the Park EMU website starting Monday Dec. 9. All faculty, staff, and students are expected to purchase a permit.

If drivers do not have a purchased pass, they must park in the visitor parking.

If students or faculty fail to purchase a permit that may be subject to a parking violation. These violation fines can range anywhere from $10 to $200, ParkEMU reported on its website. Violation citations can be issued every four hours to illegally parked cars. Along with the violation it is important to note that there is a $3 administrative fee. If the fine is not paid after 15 days there will be a $5 charge and after 45 days an additional $5.

ParkEMU allows up to two license plates to be registered to one permit. If a student chooses to add more than one licence plate to their permit, they are only to have one vehicle parked on campus at a time. A citation may be issued if a vehicle is found to be in violation of sharing a permit.

The fine for parking in the lot without a permit is $28. There can be up to six citations and then a vehicle could be impounded.

Standard student permits are valid from Jan. 1 to April 30.  Extended permits are also available for those seeking permits through May 31. Specific information regarding costs can be found on the ParkEMU website.

The price of student parking permits at EMU has increased in the past two years from $198 a semester to $214 a semester, an overall 8% increase. Students who live on campus and have vehicles also must purchase a permit for the same price unless they reside in the Cornell or Westview Apartments.

Officials in the ParkEMU office said they could not comment on this subject. ParkEMU is an operational unit of the private company LAZ Parking, which manages all parking issues on Eastern Michigan University's campus.  The university turned over all parking operations to the company in 2018 through a $59 million, 35-year contract. The parking company gave the university $55 million upfront, and agreed to spend $4 million on parking facility improvements in the first two years of the agreement. In exchange, LAZ Parking retains all revenues and was limited to no more than 5% annual increases in parking costs for the first five years.
