Eastern Michigan University senior kicker Jesús Gómez, one of the most accomplished players in program history, has officially entered the transfer portal. The announcement via social media marks the end of a remarkable chapter for Gómez at EMU and sets the stage for an exciting new opportunity.
A Historic 2024 Season
Gómez’s decision comes amid an extraordinary 2024 season that earned him three MAC Special Teams Player of the Week honors. On September 9, he was recognized for his standout performance against No. 25 Washington, where he nailed all three of his field goal attempts, including a program-record 57-yarder, a 50-yard kick, and a 29-yarder. His efforts made him the first kicker in EMU history to convert multiple field goals of 50 or more yards in a single game. He followed that with additional honors on September 16, after his clutch kicking helped secure a double-overtime win against Jacksonville State, and on September 23, when his precision again made the difference in a win over St. Francis.
The 2024 season has highlighted Gómez’s consistency and composure. He ranks 10th in FBS with 20 field goals this year, demonstrating remarkable accuracy with an 11-for-12 performance on attempts between 20-39 yards and a 9-for-13 showing on kicks from 40 yards or beyond. A Career of Excellence
Gómez’s achievements continue a decorated career at EMU, where he has set records and earned accolades while becoming a cornerstone of the Eagles’ special teams unit. In 2023, he made headlines with a 55-yard field goal against Central Michigan, tying for the 15th-longest kick in the NCAA that season. Over his career, he has connected on 46 of 58 field goal attempts, including six from 50 or more yards, and scored 233 points.
His honors include being named to the 2022 Second Team All-MAC, earning preseason recognition from Athlon Sports and Phil Steele, and being placed on the prestigious Lou Groza Award Watch List in 2024. He has also excelled academically, receiving multiple Academic All-MAC and College Sports Communicators Academic All-District accolades.
A Journey of Dedication
A native of Puebla, Mexico, Gómez’s journey to collegiate football has been as remarkable as his accomplishments on the field. His father’s dedication to helping him succeed in the sport led to countless trips to football games in Mexico, where they sought advice from kickers who could guide his development. Gómez credits his family’s sacrifices as a driving force behind his success.
Reflecting on his career, he has often emphasized the importance of teamwork and preparation, acknowledging the collective effort that allows him to thrive in high-pressure moments.
What’s Next?
While Gómez’s departure represents a significant loss for Eastern Michigan, his time with the program will be remembered for the records he broke, the games he won, and the inspiration he provided to teammates and fans. As one of the top kickers in college football, he is expected to draw significant interest in the transfer portal.
His next destination remains uncertain, but wherever he lands, Gómez’s legacy at EMU is secure, and his future promises to be just as impactful as his time with the Eagles.
