Eastern Michigan football secures key transfers for upcoming season

Eastern Michigan University continues to fortify its football program with the addition of two new excellent players. Former University of Michigan running back Tavierre Dunlap and DeSmet High School’s star defensive end Quincy Byas are set to join the Eagles in 2025. Their talent will give the team a sharp competitive edge as the Eagles prepare for the 2025 season.

From the Wolverines to the Eagles: Tavierre Dunlap's Next Chapter

After four seasons with the University of Michigan, Tavierre Dunlap has chosen to stay close to Ann Arbor and commit to EMU for his final collegiate year. A four-star recruit from Texas in Michigan’s 2021 class, Dunlap faced stiff competition in a loaded backfield featuring standouts such as Hassan Haskins and Blake Corum. Despite limited playing time, he showcased his ability with 22 carries for 138 yards and a touchdown with the Wolverines.

His lone carry in the 2023 season — a 20-yard touchdown on Senior Day against Northwestern University — demonstrated his knack for big moments. At EMU, Dunlap will have the opportunity to compete for a starting role. His experience and versatility will be vital to the Eagles’ offense.

Quincy Byas: A Defensive Force Joins the Eagles

EMU has also landed one of the Midwest’s top defensive prospects, Quincy Byas. The 6-foot-2, 230-pound defensive end from De Smet High School in Missouri brings an impressive resume, including back-to-back MCC Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2022 and 2023. Byas also recorded stellar career varsity stats: 106 total tackles (86 solo, 28 for loss and 37 assisted), 28 sacks, three interceptions, three touchdowns and two fumble recoveries.

His accolades include the following:

  • 2022 1st Team All-MCC Conference Defense
  • 2023 Defensive Player of the Year (All-MCC Conference)
  • 2023 1st Team All-MCC Conference Defense
  • 2023 1st Team All-State Class 6A (Missouri) Defensive Line
  • 2023 1st Team All-State Conference 6A 3rd District Defensive Line

Byas received offers from several prominent programs, including Michigan, Indiana, and Harvard, but he chose EMU as the next step in his career. Known for his explosive speed, strength and relentless pursuit of quarterbacks, Byas will bolster the Eagles’ defensive line and is expected to make an immediate impact.

Building Momentum for the Future

The additions of Dunlap and Byas underscore EMU's commitment to strengthening its football program and competing in the highly competitive Mid-American Conference. Head Coach Chris Creighton continues to attract talent that balances experience with potential, setting the stage for a successful season.

Dunlap’s leadership and veteran presence in the backfield and Byas’ remarkable athleticism and decorated high school career provide the Eagles with a dynamic blend of skill and intensity. As the program builds momentum, EMU fans can look forward to a season filled with promise and excitement as the Eagles prepare for a bright future.
