Review: 'We Live in Time' leaves the audience in tears

"We Live in Time," directed by John Crowley, is limited in theaters and will be released on streaming services on Nov. 25. This film features Andrew Garfield as Tobias and Florence Pugh as Almut. Their chemistry is intriguing and their love story is exceptional. Due to the explicit content and language, this is for a mature audience only.

Almut and Tobias are brought together by a surprise encounter that forever changes their lives. This challenge limits their time to cherish each moment together. This movie consists of flashbacks about how they fell in love. The challenges they face together show the actual test of how strong their love can be.

Highs

The highlights in this film revolve around the incredible emotions that Garfield and Pugh portray through their characters. This is a different role for Garfield, known for his “Amazing Spider-Man” films. His acting in portraying a character who is faced with the love of his life and a terrible illness is impressive. He shows deep emotions of fear and love within a time limit.

Pugh portrays Almut as an exceptional chef dealing with an illness that soon takes over her life. She faces the challenge of giving up her dream due to being ill and having a limit on achieving what she wants to do in her life. Her character's challenges are heartbreaking and profound, leaving the love of her life and her daughter to destroy her well-being. The amount of heartbreak and emotion Pugh portrays is beautifully done. As life throws her the most heartbreaking curve ball, her character continues to be strong and achieves one last dream before the time is up.

Another high point is the intriguing and dramatic love story between the characters. But this doesn't stop Tobias from continuing to chase Almut. This movie starts with Tobias facing challenges that make him depressed until he finds Almut. The love story is intriguing and keeps the audience engaged and curious about what will happen next.

The scenes of Tobias and Almut were captured beautifully, showing the aspects of love and cherished moments. The chemistry in this film is a highlight, considering the strong connection between the characters. Their relationship keeps the audience interested and full of emotion. The plot is also impactful as it shows the truth of what illnesses can do to a family.

Lows

There were minimal lows in this film. The main low was the flashbacks; they were confusing. It was hard to decipher which was which until the middle of the film. Another low was the lack of background information on Tobias, including what he experienced before he met Almut and why he was so depressed.

Another low point was how Almut mistreated Tobias, even when all he was doing was asking a simple question. She sometimes gets very defensive, even when he tries to improve things. His effort and love can go unseen and unappreciated at times, which destroys his self-esteem. His character is too emotional, which is a low point because he is portrayed as weak. The last low was the ending. It did not quite let the audience know what happened; it left the audience to assume what happened.

Verdict

"We Live in Time" is a heartbreaking film full of profound moments, making it a must-watch for any romantic drama enthusiast. It is a truly beautiful story about illness, drama, and challenges.

Rating: 7.5 out of 10.
