Millages on Washtenaw County ballot offer funding for community programming

Washtenaw County Proposal 1: Renewal and restoration of the Enhanced Emergency Communications System Millage 

Revenue from the approval of this millage would be used solely to enhance Washtenaw County communications systems, paying for renovation, maintenance, and upgrades to the county’s Enhanced Emergency Communications Systems. This may potentially include the construction of additional towers, upgrading current infrastructure, purchasing equipment, and paying for maintenance and user fees. If passed, the millage would raise an estimated $4.5 million when first imposed in 2026. 

The passing of this millage would raise the limit of property taxes in Washtenaw County, Michigan, by 0.200 mills (which is 20 cents for every $1,000 of taxable property value) for 10 years, from 2026 to 2035. This would be a renewal of a smaller tax that is currently in place (0.0960 mills), which will be ending in 2025. The new tax would include a small increase (0.009 mills).

Washtenaw County Proposal 2: Renewal and restoration of the Veteran’s Relief Millage

Revenue from the approval of this millage would be used to support the Washtenaw County Department of Veterans Affairs. This would include providing financial assistance and services to veterans in the Washtenaw County area. This also would include paying claims to eligible veterans, (those who have been rendered sick or injured while serving in the military). If passed, this millage would raise an estimated $2.2 million once started in 2024. 

Approval of this millage would raise the tax limit in Washtenaw County, Michigan, by 0.100 mill (10 cents for every $1,000 of taxable property value) for eight years between 2024 and 2031. This tax would be a renewal of a smaller amount that was approved in 2016. The new tax would also include a small increase (0.004 mill) due to a prior reduction. 

Washtenaw County Proposal 3: Establishing an Older Persons Services Millage

Approval of this millage would provide revenue to support the creation of new services and activities for people 60 and older in Washtenaw County. If passed, the millage would raise an estimated $11.6 million in its first year.

The passing of this millage would raise the tax limit in Washtenaw County, Michigan, up to 0.5000 mill (50 cents for every $1,000 of taxable property value) for eight years between 2024 and 2031. 

Washtenaw County Proposal 4: Renewal and Restoration of the Washtenaw County Community Mental Health and Public Safety Preservation Millage

The passing of this millage would be used to support the Washtenaw County Community Mental Health Department, along with the sheriff’s office and police departments to help improve both local mental health services and law enforcement. When breaking it down by percentage of what will go where: 38% of the funding would go to mental health services; 38% would go to the sheriff’s office; and 24% would go to local police departments. If passed, the millage would raise an estimated $22.4 million once started in 2026. 

The passing of this millage would raise the tax limit in Washtenaw County, Michigan, by 1.000 mill ($1 for every $1,000 of taxable property value) for eight years between 2026 and 2033. This tax would be a renewal of a tax approved in 2017. This millage would also include an increase (0.0307 mill) due to a prior reduction.
