The Temptations 2

EMU welcomed The Temptations to perform with Marching Band during Oct. 12 halftime performance

After much anticipation, Eastern Michigan University welcomed the iconic vocal group, The Temptations, with the EMU Marching Band, The Pride of Peninsula, during halftime of the football game against Miami University on Saturday, Oct. 12, at Rynearson Stadium.

This event was especially unforgettable, highlighted by the presence of EMU alumnus and Detroit native Jawan M. Jackson, who became part of The Temptations in 2022.

Prior to the group's performance with the marching band, The Temptations were welcomed for a luncheon at University House, the residence of EMU President Smith, and a venue for various university events.

This occasion was made even more special as two lucky families, chosen through a social media contest for their children's passion for music and desire to meet the legendary group, joined EMU donors and leaders for this rare opportunity to meet The Temptations.

Speaking at the luncheon, J. Nick Smith, associate director of Bands and director of Athletic Bands at Eastern, explained that almost a year ago he was introduced to Eastern alumnus Jawan M. Jackson at the university Student Center.

“The next words out of my mouth were ‘Do you think they [The Temptations] would perform with the marching band?’ And Jawan said ‘I think so,’ and here they are!” he said.

Smith continued by giving some insight on what this day means on behalf of Eastern’s students.

“The warmth and embrace that you share with them, your general love for music, every single one of those students has the same and are over the moon that we are able to be a part of this,” he said.

Having the youngest and newest member of The Temptations as an alumnus, Jackson's return to his alma mater has created a unique opportunity for connection.

“It’s surreal. When I first started I was 18. As unfamiliar as it was when I came here, now because I have been gone so long, everything is so new; it feels brand new all over again. I am excited, I am nervous, I am anxious, I have all the feels. But, I am happy to be back here,” he said.

Jackson also highlighted how the university played a pivotal role in shaping his journey to where he is now.

“The Eastern Michigan Gospel Choir. I was a part of that when I was here and they shaped and molded me to sing with a group, to learn, to come out of my shell. Before I came here I was trying to sing high tenor and all these baritone notes, and I was like this isn’t me, and I found my sound. So, somewhere in between those years here at Eastern, they became such a family,” he said.

Jackson further highlighted the guidance he offers to EMU students aspiring to create their own paths and develop the careers they desire.

“Don’t try to mimic anyone. Be authentically yourself, cause that always works. If you think your weakness is bad, it may actually be your strength. That was my realization. I found out later on. I wish I would have found out earlier; I probably would have got to where I am today a little bit faster, but I had to go through those journey’s, and that storm if you will, in order to come out clean on the other side,” he said. “Be diligent, always be willing to learn and listen. Everything fast isn’t always good. Take your time and learn your craft. Be persistent.”

The Temptations, a celebrated American vocal group, have profoundly influenced music history with their groundbreaking work in R&B and soul. The performance at the EMU football game was a memorable celebration of talent and tradition, especially with an EMU alumnus in attendance.

Their iconic sound energized the crowd, uniting fans across generations and fostering pride in the EMU community. This experience highlighted the lasting legacy of both the band and the university.

This unforgettable performance has now made the university a part of their legendary legacy.
