Review: 'Incoming' though humorous, lacks fulfilling plot line

This is a modern high school movie that involves crazy adventures at a party. These freshmen boys learn the true meaning of partying with seniors.

Netflix original 'Incoming' features Mason Thames as Benji and Isabella Ferreira as Bailey. This movie is about teenagers who just started their freshman year of high school. It is full of humorous drama and is for a mature audience only.

This film is about four freshmen who start high school, the boys' names are Benji, Connor (Raphael Alejandro), Eddie (Ramon Reed), and Koosh (Bardia Seiri). These boys attend their first high school party, preparing themselves for the craziness. Specifically, Benji is pining for his sister's best friend Bailey. At this party, he plans to make a move on her and show his true feelings for her. While Koosh is trying to prove to his brother that he is not a loser by hooking up with a senior. The last two boys Conner and Eddie go on an adventure with Katrina (Loren Gray).

Highs

There are minimal highs in this movie considering that the plot is quite simple. It is an easy plot with intense humorous jokes from the freshmen boys. Each of these young actors performed perfectly for Generation Z teenagers. Benji was this shy boy, who was in love with his sister's best friend which is typical. Thames performed his part well and in the movie, he sings which is impressive.

Another high is the friendship between Connor and Eddie, they stick together after getting kicked out of the party. They are a funny pair when it comes to freaking out in situations. Their scenes were the most entertaining throughout the whole movie. Along with Loren Gray playing as Katrina was a high since the rest of the actors were not familiar. Gray's acting was great and surprising, considering she has not been in many films.

The chemistry teacher played by Bobby Cannavale in the film Mitch Studes is another highlight. Because he was so funny, his character was essential throughout the film. He was this teacher who liked taking shots and going out to parties with his students. The students think of him as the "cool teacher". His character chooses to attend the party since he finds it difficult to hang out with individuals his age.

Lows

The lows within this film have to do with the plot because it was too simple without much detail. The plot needed more background knowledge on the freshmen attending high school. It was focused on Benji of how he was going to get Bailey to become his girlfriend. Bailey's character is very confusing, she does not show her feelings quite clearly.

Another low point was that this high school party can be unrealistic in the sense that the activities happening like smoking cocaine. It is uncommon for high school students to have cocaine at a party, that sounds more like a college party. The things that were happening at this party were intense and crazy. It was an over-exaggeration.

In a way, the entire film was an abomination because the youths were using drugs and playing tough guys. It lacked a plot and was utterly implausible. It also had no conclusion. The end goal of this movie was unclear and it could've been better if there was a life lesson taught.

Verdict

This movie is intense in the sense of explicit language and activities. This is not worth the watch because the plot doesn't lead to an end goal.
