On Sept. 18, there will be a free training for all EMU students and employees on how to use naloxone medication, better known under the brand name Narcan, which is used to help reverse opioid overdoses.
Narcan has been available on campus since April, 2024. The medication is located in AED boxes found around various buildings and places around campus. This is not the first of the trainings on the use of Narcan.
“We have done it at least ten times now, and I know that there are several sessions to continue going on this fall,” Frank Schaller, associate director for undergraduate nursing studies and associate professor, said.
The next scheduled event will be held on Monday, Sept. 23.
“We have a massive problem with the US opioid epidemic. Not only in the US but if you zoom into Washtenaw county as well,” Schaller said.
The opioid death rate for 2024 as reported in Opioid Data from washtenaw.org has reached a total of 28 people.
“If we don't use the tools we have in our tool chest, then more and more people are going to continue to unfortunately suffer and die from this problem,” Schaller said.
To register for the training, email Auggie Mickevicius at amickevi@emich.edu. Include your name, training date, department, and EID.
