EMU's Sam Peterson earns MAC Runner Of The Week honors

Sam Peterson (Charlevoix, Mich.) has been looking for a career moment in his time at Eastern Michigan, and he found it in the first race of his junior year.

Peterson covered the 3.1-mile 5-kilometer course at the Jeff Drenth Memorial Invitational in 14 minutes and 56 seconds to come in third place overall at the meet.

The result comes from a meet last year, when he was 23 seconds slower at 15:19. Along with Peterson, Eastern Michigan's men’s race had two other athletes place in the top five, including Lachlan Cornelius (Queensland, Brisbane, Australia) and Ty Dailey (Phoenix, Maryland).

Both runners had times of under 15 minutes for Eastern Michigan. The Eagles won the men’s race and took second place in the women’s race. The scores were 31 for the men and 38 for the women.

Eastern Michigan had three runners finish in the top 10 in the women’s race. These included Marta Moreno (Wassenaar, Netherlands), Lucy Jones (Haverhill, England), and Anita Zaro (Timișoara, Romania), who had times of 17:36, 18:11, and 18:20, which were good enough for second, fifth, and eighth place for the race.

The meet took place at Shepherd High School in Shepherd, Michigan, about 10 miles from the Central Michigan University campus, which was the host of this meet with temperatures in the mid-80s. Eight schools competed in this meet, including Eastern Michigan, Central Michigan, Michigan State, Cornerstone, Lansing Community College, Grace Christian, Alma College, and Concordia.
