Study spots on and around Eastern Michigan University's campus

Whether you're a first-year student trying to find your footing or an experienced undergrad seeking a change of scenery, Eastern Michigan University and the city of Ypsilanti have numerous hot-spots that can transform your academic experience.

Exploring study locations gives you access to a variety of settings that can improve productivity and focus. Each location offers a different atmosphere to fit your preferred learning method; from quiet study lounges to active coffee shops and comforting libraries, choosing the right study spot may increase the efficiency and enjoyment of your study sessions.

1. Student Center

The hub of Eastern Michigan University, located on the central part of campus, is one of the liveliest buildings for students. The Center provides a wide range of eatery choices, fireplace lounges, study rooms, and seating in and outside of the building, with quiet and closed off rooms available for students to share or enjoy alone. The building is open to students Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to midnight, on Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, noon to 11 p.m.

2. Halle Library

For the use of EMU teachers, staff, and students, the Halle Library offers a range of rooms; some available to reserve in advance. These consist of classrooms, computer labs, and study spaces for both individuals and groups. The location of all available parking can be found on the Parking Map.

3. Study Lounges

Study rooms offer a quiet and dedicated space designed to enhance focus and productivity, making them ideal for concentrated work. Along with the Student Center and library lounges, each residence hall includes a designated study area that is always available for students.

4. Ypsilanti District Library

The Ypsilanti District Library is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 1-5 p.m. on Sunday, and is located at 5577 Whittaker Rd. The YDL offers study meeting rooms, open study areas, exam proctoring, drop-in and virtual writing help, and computer classes.

5. Coffee Shops

Coffee shops can be great for studying because they provide a lively yet relaxed atmosphere, a change of scenery, and a steady supply of caffeine for energy that can boost creativity and motivation. Located on Eastern’s campus at the Student Center is a Starbucks with available seating for students to relax, study, and enjoy a treat. Downtown Ypsilanti, near campus, offers a few other coffee shops including Café Liv, Hyperion Coffee, and Vertex Coffee Roasters, that can offer less formal settings compared to campus spaces.

6. The Greenhouse

The greenhouse is housed on Eastern's campus on the south side of the Jefferson Science Complex. Navigating through the assortment of plants will lead you to a sort of hidden gem; a nook with a table and seats. This location may be ideal for research, quiet study sessions, or spending time among the plants. This spot is open to all students on campus looking to learn or for a place to relax.
