Short n Sweet Album Cover

Review: Sabrina Carpenter’s “Short n’ Sweet” is an album of cheeky ear worms

After a whole summer singing and hearing about “that me espresso,” Sabrina Carpenter’s newest album, “Short n’ Sweet,” has arrived.

The album was preceded by its ultra successful singles, “Espresso” and “Please, Please, Please,” the latter of which earned Carpenter her first number one on the Billboard Hot 100.

The album’s third single, “Taste,” dropped alongside the record with a video that took the internet by storm. The video, starring Carpenter and actress Jenna Ortega, shows a vengeful Carpenter out to murder her ex’s new girlfriend.

Highs

“Taste” would already be iconic just for its homoerotic jealousy, but the video takes it to the next level. It’s the sexy, musical slasher I didn’t know I needed in my life. A deliciously catchy melody, “Taste,” captures a common feeling about seeing someone you loved move on.

And that’s just the first track. The album goes on to take the listener through a powerful range of songs that depict the highs and lows of modern age dating.

Sabrina Carpenter displays a dynamic lyricism that only a young woman with the heat of the spotlight on her could: from the sultry lyrics and production of “Bed Chem,” in which Carpenter imagines her sexual chemistry with the “cute guy with the white jacket and the thick accent, to the heart wrenching “Lie to Girls,” where she states “You don’t have to lie to girls/ If they like you, they’ll just lie to themselves.”

Lows

The only real low to this album is in its length, or lack thereof. While it’s a bit short and sweet (no pun intended) for a sixth studio album, I can only expect that there will be some type of deluxe or extended version with additional songs in the near future.

Verdict

“Short n’ Sweet” is just that. Put it on repeat and you won’t even realize you’ve listened to it 3 times before your class is over.
