"Deadpool & Wolverine" was directed by Shawn Levy and released on Friday, July 26. The theaters were sold out and filled with laughter. The film is the third inclusion to the Deadpool trilogy, starring Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson or Deadpool and Hugh Jackman as Logan or The Wolverine. "Deadpool & Wolverine" is for a mature audience only.
Synopsis
The film centers around Wade Wilson living a civilian life after retiring from the persona of Deadpool when his world is suddenly flipped upside down and the people he cares about are put in danger. He then stumbles upon a wounded Wolverine that he must convince to help him save his loved ones.
Highs
The highs of this film are many, especially for hardcore superhero movie/comic book fans. For starters, the special effects and CGI were top-notch. Many instances of close-up fighting and action show how much the industry has advanced over time. Combining this with the dialogue and clever quips makes this movie feel like a perfect gift to fans of the genre.
Hugh Jackman brings his top performance to anything he works on, and this film is no exception. Jackman had many moments in the film that were heartfelt and emotional, which contrasted nicely with the comedic and witty energy of the film. Ryan Reynolds and the character of Deadpool go together like bread and butter. This film explores a different, humorous side of Wolverine, associated with the X-Men. However, this film demonstrated his ability to work with a different superhero outside of X-Men.
From the beginning, the film fills the audience with laughter. Reynolds was made for this role, and the more he plays it, the more it is apparent. His hilarious back-and-forth bouts with Jackman’s Wolverine are just as funny as they are clever. The two carry this film in a two-hour and seven-minute time frame that doesn’t feel long enough for fans.
Lows
This movie does not have many lows. The minimal lows center around pacing issues and a somewhat scattered and confusing plot. Initially, all is well for our main character, Wade Wilson, but he is soon dragged into a world where he must make a decision quickly and embrace the mercenary life he is known for. This seems like a simple plot, however, without going into any spoilers, the circumstances he is put in may be confusing to people who aren’t well-versed in all of the previous films or other Marvel media. A few scenes dragged on, but usually were followed up by a hilarious or action-packed scene, which made it worthwhile.
Verdict
"Deadpool & Wolverine" is one of those movies that come along once in a while that make it prideful to be a comic book fan. Regardless of that, even regular movie-goers will enjoy this movie throughout and find themselves laughing and becoming Deadpool fans themselves.
