Eagle Tips and Tales: August 27-September 2

The Eastern Echo is back with "Eagle Tips and Tales", a column keeping you up to date on everything EMU Athletics. Here's what's happening this week as we head back to campus.

EMU Athletics partners with Eastern Market Brewing Co. for co-branded beer

Eastern Michigan University (EMU) Athletics has partnered with Detroit's Eastern Market Brewing Co. (EMBC) to create a co-branded beer for EMU fans. With a 4.5% ABV, this specially crafted American lager celebrates the university's traditions, its dedicated fan base, and the Ypsilanti community. The beer will be available at Rynearson Stadium, the George Gervin GameAbove Center, and select regional locations. EMU fans can participate in naming the brew, with voting open until August 25. The five potential names reflect EMU's spirit; the winning name will be revealed later this fall.

This partnership enhances the game-day experience and strengthens the connection between EMU and its community. The collaboration with Eastern Market Brewing Co., known for its innovative brewing techniques, allows EMU to offer fans a unique product that embodies school pride. The beer launch coincides with the fall sports season, making it a timely addition to EMU's offerings for its supporters.

EMU football honors Demarius Reed with "The Deuce" tradition

Eastern Michigan University's (EMU) football program continues to honor the legacy of Demarius Reed, a former wide receiver who passed away in 2013, through the tradition of "The Deuce." This unique number 2 jersey is awarded to a senior player who exemplifies integrity, character, and leadership—qualities that Reed embodied. Unlike other jerseys, "The Deuce" cannot be requested; it must be earned through actions on and off the field. This year, senior wide receiver Oran Singleton was selected to wear "The Deuce," continuing the tradition that started in 2017 with the blessing of Reed's family.

The selection of "The Deuce" not only pays tribute to Reed's memory, but also reminds EMU football players of the high standards they strive to meet. The jersey has been worn by several distinguished players over the years, each contributing to the program's legacy of excellence. As the 2024 season approaches, the team prepares to honor Reed's legacy both on the field and within the broader EMU community.

Lucie Roy named Assistant Rowing Coach at EMU

Eastern Michigan University (EMU) has appointed Lucie Roy as the new assistant coach for its rowing program. Roy joins EMU after a successful tenure as the Head Men's and Women's Rowing Coach at Adrian College, where she led both teams to multiple medals. Her experience as a rower at Michigan State University and her leadership skills make her a valuable addition to the EMU coaching staff. Roy's achievements as a student-athlete, including her recognition as a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, further highlight her dedication to the sport.

With Roy's arrival, EMU's rowing program is poised for growth and success in the coming seasons. Her background in developing successful rowing programs will be instrumental in advancing the team's competitive edge. As the program continues to evolve, Roy's expertise and commitment are expected to have a lasting impact on the athletes and the overall success of EMU rowing.
