5 resources you have access to as an EMU student

Whether you’re brand new to campus or a seasoned Eagle, it always helps to know how to get a little help when you need it. Support is fundamental, especially in college, so keep reading for five resources around campus you might not have known you have access to.

Swoop’s Food Pantry

Located in John and Angie Sabo Swoop’s Food Pantry Room, or 100 Pierce Hall, Swoop’s Food Pantry is open to all EMU community members. This includes students, staff, faculty, lectures, and recent alums. Swoop’s provides food and non-food items at no cost to shoppers with a valid EID number or card. All shoppers must complete an intake form before going to the pantry. Shoppers can go in-person to the pantry or place an online order through the Swoop’s order form. Swoop’s Pantry Fall 2024 hours are scheduled as noon to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, and noon to 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

Career Closet

The EMU Career Closet, sponsored by the University Advising and Career Development Center, is a free shopping experience for EMU students to find and keep professional attire. The inventory is gender inclusive and the shopping experience includes a private fitting room for shoppers. All clothing items accepted by the Career Closet must meet specific criteria such as being new or gently worn, in good condition, purchased within the past five to six years, and cleaned prior to donation. The career closet does not accept ripped, torn, or damaged items. EMU students have the opportunity to take up to four pieces of clothing including shoes and accessories every semester. The EMU Career Closet is located in 251 McKenny and is open Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Holman Success Center

The Holman Success Center is dedicated to providing services to all students. Some of their programs include Eagle Study Tables, personal tutoring, Supplemental Instruction, Peer Academic Coaching, and Success Coaching. All of these programs are available to any EMU student and can be accessed through the Holman Success Center website or by visiting their office in G04 Halle Library. The HSC also hosts the GEAR UP and the King-Chavez-Parks programs which aim to support students heading to college.

Counseling and Psychological Services

EMU CAPS offers mental health services to EMU students at no or little cost. Students enrolled at least half time have access to individual counseling, group sessions, and educational workshops. All students in need of mental health care should fill out an intake form on the CAPS website. CAPS also offers resources for emergency assistance and self-help for students who need it.

LGBT Resource Center STI testing

EMU’s LGBT Resource Center is partnered with a local community non-profit to provide free, confidential STI and HIV testing and counseling for students. Appointments are available every other THursday during the academic year and monthly during the summer. Appointments are estimated to last 35 to 45 minutes and can be scheduled online. Appointment slots are typically available up to three weeks in advance.
