EMU vs. WMU Men's Basketball

Jay Smith joins men’s basketball as assistant coach, player development specialist

The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball program has appointed Jay Smith as Assistant Coach/Player Development Specialist and announced Head Coach Stan Heath on June 10.

Smith, entering his 39th season in collegiate basketball, recently served as Director of Player Personnel and Development at the University of Michigan, where he contributed to an 87-72 record over five seasons.

Heath expressed that Smith brings extensive experience and knowledge to the program, having coached at high levels and worked with many professionals. Heath emphasized that Smith's focus on player development will be a significant asset to the team's success.

Smith's extensive coaching career includes head coach positions at Kalamazoo College, Central Michigan University, and Grand Valley State University, as well as assistant roles at the University of Detroit Mercy, Michigan, and Kent State University.

Smith thanked Heath and EMU for the opportunity, highlighting his longstanding relationship with Heath and his enthusiasm for working together after years of coaching against him.

Smith, a Saginaw Valley State University graduate, was a key recruiter for Michigan's "Fab Five" and led Central Michigan to two Mid-American Conference titles. He also helped Detroit Mercy and Grand Valley State to NCAA Tournament appearances.

A former Michigan Mr. Basketball, Smith's high school scoring record of 2,841 points at Mio AuSable High School is yet to be broken.
