New York Jets score big: EMU wide receiver Hamze El-Zayat joins the team

El-Zayat becomes fourth EMU player to land NFL contract as undrafted free agent post 2024 draft

On May 13, former Eastern Michigan University wide receiver Hamze El-Zayat (Dearborn, Michigan/Fordson/Fordham) officially secured a spot with the NFL's New York Jets.

El-Zayat's path to the NFL spotlight began when he transferred to EMU in 2022 where he quickly became a notable part of the team during the spring. Although he didn't compete in the 2022 campaign, his skills shined through, earning him a place on the radar of NFL scouts.

Before his tenure at EMU, El-Zayat showcased his talents at Fordham where he spent three years as a starter. In 2021, he wrapped up his Fordham career as the third-leading receiver, demonstrating his prowess with 40 receptions for 400 yards and one touchdown. His standout performances included a remarkable game against Lafayette, where he tallied 13 receptions for 166 yards, both career highs.

During his junior year at Fordham in 2019, El-Zayat emerged as a pivotal figure, leading the team with 62 receptions for 642 yards and four touchdowns. His impressive stats earned him recognition as Phil Steele Third Team All-Patriot League. Notably, he displayed consistency throughout the season making key plays in various matchups, including standout performances against Holy Cross and Colgate.

This signing adds to the legacy of Eastern Michigan football, which has seen six players drafted and 29 securing free-agent or mini-camp deals since 2015.
