Eastern Michigan's Student Government and E|Dining will host a Community Iftar event for students participating in Ramadan at The Commons on Tuesday, April 2 from 8-9 p.m.
During the month of Ramadan Muslims around the world fast from dawn to dusk from Sunday, March 10, – Tuesday, Apr 9. Iftar is one of the religious observances of Ramadan and is the evening meal that breaks the fasting.
At this celebration, The Commons will be serving traditional Middle Eastern cuisine such as halal lamb stew, lentil soup, fattoush salad, and more.
Syed Wasiuddin, the current stand-in president for Student Government said that dining and the Student Government saw this as an opportunity for Muslim students to commune and for non-Muslims to educate themselves.
This event was also held last year however the Arab Society at EMU was the collaborator, not the Student Government.
"Last year's event went extremely well! For any cultural celebration, collaboration with a student organization always makes these events better," Greg Richards, the director of marketing for E|Dining said.
"As with all cultural events, we try to involve as many people as possible to make sure we aren't forgetting anything. For this event, we consulted with student government and multiple international students when determining this years Ramadan offerings. If there are those who feel like something was missing, we encourage them to be a part of our student food advisory group," Richards said.
