Winter 2023 Commencement

Embrace every moment before commencement

The weather is getting warmer, meaning the end of the winter semester is upon us. While students and faculty wrap up their remaining tasks and assignments, the class of 2024 prepares for graduation. Graduation is a time to reminisce about great experiences had over the past few years, as well as those tough moments tackled through strength and perseverance. Between meeting deadlines and overcoming challenging coursework, finding time to fit in fun activities during college might have been difficult. So for those nearing the end of their EMU experience, here are a few ways to get the most out of those last few days on campus.

Check out Insomnia Cookies

Pulling an all-nighter studying for finals, or just in the mood for something sweet? Fuel up with an Insomnia Cookies run. The shop is just across from Boone Hall on West Cross Street Whether it's a warm, gooey chocolate chip cookie or a cold cookie-filled pint of ice cream to beat the heat, Insomnia Cookies has all of those favorite flavors. The shop is open until 1 a.m. from Sunday to Wednesday, and 3 a.m. from Thursday to Saturday. Vegan and gluten-free options are included!

Visit the Planetarium

Has the recent solar eclipse sparked inspiration to learn more about the solar system? Luckily EMU is home to its very own astronomical experience. Inside the giant sphere at the top of the Science Complex atrium is a digital theater with a 28-foot ceiling designed for viewing realistic projections of space. The planetarium also offers specials shows throughout the year. Check out the library of shows on the planetarium's web page.

Support Seniors' Music

Pease Auditorium is a large concert hall on campus, at College Place and West Cross Street. If you haven't visited yet, now is a great opportunity to see the grand building and support the EMU School of Music and Dance. Senior students are celebrating their time in the program with solo recitals to showcase their skills. The Symphony Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble and Company E also have end-of-the-year showcases planned. Check out the EMU Calendar to see when performances are being held.

Explore Downtown Ypsilanti

Haven’t found time to explore off-campus yet? Downtown Ypsilanti is right around the corner from campus and has many shops, restaurants, and museums to visit. Check out Bobcat Bonnie’s for a diverse menu of delicious food and drinks, and don’t forget to head downstairs to Keystone, the arcade bar directly underneath the restaurant. Grab some late-night eats and a tasty mocktail from The Wurst Bar. Visit the Michigan Firehouse Museum or the Ypsilanti Automotive Heritage Museum to learn something new about Ypsi's history. Thrift unique vinyl, clothes, and decor at A2vintage, and stop by ModelCave to pick up a new building project. Check out these stops and more in Ypsilanti’s vibrant downtown scene.

Grab Memorabilia from the Bookstore

The student center is the hub of campus. Located on the first floor by the south entrance is the EMU Bookstore. While you are inside picking up your cap and gown for commencement, don't forget to grab something to help you always remember your time as an EMU Eagle. If you don't have time to browse, visit the store website to see what's in stock. The store currently has several deals and sales, so now's your chance to snag some EMU memorabilia for a great price!
