Hugo hits two-run jack; EMU baseball falls to Vanderbilt, 6-2

The Eastern Michigan University baseball program traveled to number nine-ranked Vanderbilt, losing by a score of 6-2 to fall to 3-9 on the season. It was the second Nashville stop the Eagles had made this season as they opened the season up at Belmont.

Despite the loss, Eastern Michigan collected seven hits as a program to out hit the Commodores, 7-6.

Drew Jones (Cleveland, Ohio) took the mound for the Eagles and he struggled, allowing four earned runs, walking two batters, and recording just one strikeout in the 12 batters he faced. The bullpen for the Eagles only allowed two runs in seven innings.

Four of the pitchers from the bullpen pitched a scoreless frame or more, including Liam Baker (Cleveland, Ohio), Isiah Lindsey (Nunica, Mich.), Aaron Pirkle (New Albany, Ohio) and Drew Beckner (Westerville, Ohio).

Although the Eagles lost the contest by four runs, they got down early in the second inning and were not able to catch up. The Commodores had a home run and single and each scored multiple runs.

With seven hits as a team, Cory Taylor (Shelbyville, Ind.) was the only player for Eastern Michigan who recorded multiple hits, with two hits to improve his season batting average to .277. He also set a new career-high as he notched six assists.

The story of the offense for Eastern Michigan was outfielder Logan Hugo (Essexville, Mich.) who hit a two-run home run over the left-center field wall to cut the deficit to four runs. The home run was the second of the season for the outfielder, with his season average now being locked at .300. He additionally has the most hits for any Eastern Michigan player this season with 14.

As for the team, the Eagles are tied for second in the MAC with 13 home runs on the season.

EMU is still in the middle of a road trip, yet to play a game in conference play, the Eagles will open up the conference schedule when it takes on Ball State on the road on March 8. They sit in a tie for ninth place in the non-conference standings heading into conference play.

The contest in Muncie on Friday begins at 3 p.m. It is the beginning of a three-game series for the Green and White as they don’t come home until March 19, when they will open the home schedule against Michigan
