Eastern Michigan University cancels MLK Jr. Walk due to weather, other events will proceed

To celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Eastern Michigan University planned "Driven By The Dream," a host of events commemorating the activist's work. The first event to take place, the MLK Jr. Walk to Freedom on Monday, Jan. 15, has been canceled due to forecasted weather.

The forecast for Monday includes below-zero temperatures and high winds. The University said in a statement that all other planned events for "Driven By The Dream" will proceed as planned.

Monday, Jan. 15

  • Mosaic Reveal and Student Gallery Opening
    Student Center - Gallery
    10:30-11:15 a.m.
    Invitation Only. Open Viewing in the Student Center Gallery Jan. 16-30. MLK, Mosaic " Walk To Freedom." 
  • MLK Jr. President’s Luncheon
    Student Center - Ballroom
    11:30 a.m.-2 p.m.
    Doors open at 11:30 a.m. MLK, Jr. President's Luncheon begins at 12-2 p.m. The guest emcee will be Fox 2 News evening anchor, Roop Raj, and the keynote speaker will be Honorable Victoria Pratt.
  • MLK Jr. Book Signing with Honorable Victoria Pratt
    310 A Student Center
    3-4:30 p.m.
    “The Power of Dignity” by Victoria Pratt. Limited amount of books will be given on a first come first serve basis

Tuesday, Jan. 16

  • "MLK Speaks Series: Conversations & Stories Driven by the Dream"

    12-1:30 p.m.
    The MLK Speaks Series creates a dynamic opportunity for individuals to engage with each other in thinking about innovative ideas and dreams that explore, analyze, or inform our understanding of Dr. King’s lasting mission of improving the world.

  • MLK Jr. committee presents the inaugural “A Night of Dreams”

    Collection of performances by EMU students, staff, alumni and community members.

Friday, Jan. 19

  • MLK Jr. Week of Service in the Surrounding Community/EMU Engage
    Student Center
    Students, Faculty and Staff will volunteer in the surrounding community all week.

  • MLK Jr. Movie Night and Discussion - "One Night in Miami"
    5-9 p.m.
    The film and diversity, equity, and inclusion discussion will shown on Jan. 19, Student Center Auditorium.

Until further notice, Ypsilanti will continue with the city's MLK Walk.
