Eastern Michigan Expands Eastern Tuition Advantage Program and Increases Merit Based Scholarships For Students

Eastern Michigan University expands Eastern Tuition Advantage Scholarship

On Sept. 29, Eastern Michigan University released a statement on its website describing the expansion of its Eastern Tuition Advantage free tuition program and increase of merit based scholarships.

One of the largest draws for incoming freshman and transfer students is the beneficial financial aid that Eastern Michigan provides its students.

Eastern offers a plethora of tuition scholarship opportunities to all students and families. Of these scholarships, one of the most advantageous, especially for students coming from low-income households is the Eastern Tuition Advantage Scholarship (ETA).

With the Eastern Tuition Advantage scholarship, students can have their entire tuition cost fully covered with the inclusion of their Federal Student Aid.

To receive the Eastern Tuition Advantage scholarship, a student needs to be admitted by March 15, 2024, have a 3.0 cumulative GPA, be Pell Grant eligible, or have an adjusted gross family income of less than $60,000 per year as determined by the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Financial Aid)

The expansion of the award comes in the form of the inclusion of Pell Grant Awards.

Eastern Michigan University has also increased amount rewarded for merit based scholarships.

For most universities, tuition rates vary from from in-state, typically being the cheapest, to out of state, to international rates often times being significantly more expensive than the previous two.

However, at Eastern, global tuition rates are eliminated, allowing every student to pay the in state rates.

Part of what plays a role in this tuition rate is the Emerald Scholarship. The Emerald Scholarship is offered to the majority of students at Eastern, which can vary greatly in amount and compensation. This scholarship is determined based on merit and culminative GPA.

Scholarship amounts are rewarded as such:

High School GPA: Award Amount

3.75 GPA or higher: $8,000

3.5 to 3.74 GPA: $7,000

3.25 to 3.49 GPA: $6,000

3.0 to 3.24 GPA: $5,500

2.75 to 2.99 GPA: $4,000

Scholarships are vital to students across all universities, for many, scholarships and grants are what make the difference for a student to attend college or not.

By increasing scholarship programs at Eastern this will increase both the number of students that will apply and the number of students that will attend because of the benefits from the scholarship and awards.

“Our decision to expand access to the Eastern Tuition Advantage program is a response to upcoming changes with the FAFSA process, particularly the transition from Expected Family Contribution (EFC) to the Student Aid Index (SAI)," Vice President of Enrollment Management Katie Condon-Martin said in a written statement. "By expanding this program we are reaffirming our commitment to accessibility and ensuring that financial considerations don't have to stand in the way of our students' pursuit of a quality education."
