As the academic year comes to a close, Eastern Michigan University is taking steps to reduce waste and support the local community. Swoop's Food Pantry, a student-led food pantry at EMU located at 104 Pierce Hall, is spearheading a new Appliance Pick Up program that helps students offload unwanted appliances before they move out of their dorms or apartments. This initiative not only minimizes waste but also provides much-needed resources to students in need.
The Appliance Pick Up program aims to collect gently used appliances such as microwaves, refrigerators, and coffee makers, among others. Many students are burdened with the task of disposing of these items when they move out, often leading to a large amount of waste at the end of the school year. This program offers an environmentally-friendly solution to that problem while simultaneously benefiting the campus community.
Students can contact Swoop’s at swoops_pantry@emich.edu or 734-487-4173 to schedule a pick-up for their unwanted appliances, and volunteers will collect the items at their convenience. Once collected, the appliances will be cleaned, tested, and stored at Swoop's Pantry. Students next semester can then request these items free of charge, alleviating financial stress and promoting resource sharing within the university community.
In addition to the environmental benefits, the Appliance Pick Up program fosters a sense of unity and support among students. By promoting a culture of reusing and recycling, this initiative encourages students to think sustainably and help their peers in need.
Eastern Michigan University's Swoop's Pantry Appliance Pick Up program helps demonstrate their mission to sustainability and social responsibility. By providing a simple solution for unwanted appliances, EMU is not only reducing waste but also creating a more inclusive and supportive campus environment.
