What I loved
The format of the special. It was a mix of action scenes and interviews with the characters in love in Gotham. It felt easy to understand if you had a basic knowledge of DC characters, and it just was really funny overall, even if you didn’t have prior knowledge. I really love the aspect of breaking the fourth wall in a show, and this one just really made it hilarious. From magic love spells to being forever alone, the special really just hit the nail on the head.
The plot of the special. I truly didn't know what I was getting myself into when watching this, but I really liked it. I follow several different plot lines with different characters, and it just makes you so interested. My favorite plot was the Harley and Ivy plot, which is obviously the biggest part, but I just think they're so special together, and it's hilarious and wholesome at the same time.
What I didn't love
Not understanding everything. Now this isn't just a special on its own, even though it's branded this way, it's just a special in the season of the show. While I have a basic understanding of DC characters, some characters had a backstory I didn't understand or were characters I didn't know, who obviously had a huge part in the special. There was one plot line where I didn't know the character at all so their quirks were unknown to me, and I didn't really understand them.
The humor was very unenjoyable at points. I'm not the biggest fan of what you would call low brow humor with continuous sex jokes and such. I'm fine with a bit of it, but after a while, it gets very redundant. There were several plot lines where that was the main point, and I'm not sure if it was their character’s personality or not, so I just didn't like it all that much.
Verdict
I really liked this as a funny little Valentine's special, and it made me want to watch all the seasons of the show. Even if you don't know all the characters, I recommend watching it if you have HBO Max and seeing if you like it enough to watch more.
I give “Harley Quinn’s : A Very Problematic Valentine's Day Special” a 6.5 out of 10.
