Review: All Time Low's 'Don't Panic' is timeless

It has been ten years since All Time Low has brought the world "Don't Panic," and it still holds up.

All Time Low has become a staple pop-punk band in the past twenty years, coming out with such hits as “Dear Maria, Count Me In,” which just starts with a simple cough, and “Remembering Sunday,” which tells a simple but tragic tale of two potential lovers.

The group has been around for a long time and has had many ups and downs in their career, and it is undeniable that “Don’t Panic” is a highlight for this Baltimore band. When this record comes to mind, the first thing that comes to mind is one of the singles entitled “Somewhere In Neverland.”

While that is a completely valid opinion, it should be said that this record shows other treasures that are better than Peter Pan flying away with Wendy.

Album Highs

“Outlines (feat. Jason Vena)” - 8.5/10

The reason that this song has this spot is simply because of the expert lyricism. For example, “And they can speak our names in a dead language, ‘cause you and I, we’re alive.”

The song itself is taking on the idea that there is only so much time in one’s life where one can live it to the fullest before that drive is gone. So, the aforementioned lyric is a reflection of that idea. “Outlines” is a song in this record that has remained underappreciated. In mentioning All Time Low’s discography, this song should not be overlooked.

Album Lows

“Paint You Wings” - 7/10

Of course, this song is not bad at all. It was just that something had to take this spot.

“Paint You Wings” has a very captivating beginning, with the lyrics “When will the princess figure it out, she ain’t worth saving.” A lot of the words within the song hold the same tone throughout, and as stated before, this is not a bad thing. However, in the same breath, it would have been nice to see some sort of varying dynamic throughout the song. That is something a lot of listeners look for when listening to a song.

Despite that, the musicality is what keeps this from being a boring song. It is super catchy and captivating.

Honorary Mentions

“The Irony of Choking on a Lifesaver” - 8.5/10
“Backseat Serenade” - 8/10
“To Live and Let Go” - 8/10

Overview

“Don’t Panic” has made a name for itself and has aged quite well. No matter what All Time Low does in the future, it is going to be very hard to top this record.
