Finding fun things to do in the winter can be a challenge, especially for college students who are away from their families most of the time. The winter months can be long, dark and boring. Going back to visit our families during winter break isn’t enough to kill the time, but there is more that can be done.
Sledding
As Michiganders, I assume many are used to the freezing weather, so going out when the city is covered in white snow isn’t that big of a deal. Why not go sledding then? Some people say it doesn't matter if you're 5 or 105; sledding is about the most fun that anyone at any age can have in the snow! Hines Park in Michigan is about one of the greatest places to go sledding.
Ice skating
Another fun, freezing activity is ice skating. In Downtown Detroit, the Rink at Campus Martias offers one of the most beautiful and iconic skating experiences in the country and continues to be a top destination for the entire region and the State of Michigan. With the dramatic backdrop of the skyline and Detroit’s giant Christmas tree, the world’s best Olympic and US champion athletes perform and skate there annually, so if you aren’t into ice skating but want to watch people figure skating, then that’s your destination.
Snowball fights
Furthermore, if you have siblings, whether they are old or young, it’s always a good idea to have a snowball fight. It can be as simple as a snowball fight in your backyard or taking it to another level by involving parents and friends. I assure you that you will regret it, but in a good way! Building a snowman in front of your house while sipping some hot chocolate is another great sibling bonding experience.
To conclude, if winter has always been your least favorite season, at least make it a little more fun!
