Park Clean Up

Eastern Michigan University Honors College is organizing a park clean up on Oct. 7

EMU's Honors College is having a cleanup event for students to earn community service hours

The Honors College at Eastern Michigan University is having a clean-up the park event at Riverside park on Oct. 7 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The event is exclusive to EMU students, but students do not have to be in the Honors College to participate.

Riverside Park is located between Depot Town and downtown Ypsilanti. The park is 16-acres and is home to various annual events, including Heritage Festival, ElvisFest and the Michigan Summer Beer Festival. Riverside Park is also perfect for bicycling, dog walking, picnicking, fishing, and sunbathing. A part of the Washtenaw County border to border trail and the Huron River water trail run through this park.

“Students who participate in this event will earn two hours of community service. These hours can be applied to volunteer hours that are required for some honors pathways, which allows students to graduate with honors,” Rana Aabed, community engagement lead with The Honors College at EMU, said.

All participating students will meet at the Honors College before the start of the event and collect a trash bag. The Honors College is located at 511 W Forest Ave. Then participants will walk over to Riverside Park. Riverside Park is located at 2 E Cross St.

EMU Honors College hosts various events throughout the school year and summer. A park cleanup is organized two times per school year, once in the fall and once in the spring.

“Riverside Park has been adopted by The Honors College so as of now that is our focus in hopes of keeping our park clean with the support of our student volunteers,” Rana Aabed said.

Any interested EMU students can register here.
