Ypsilanti Town Recreation Department hosting first annual cornhole tournament

Top three teams at the corn hole tournament have a chance to win a cash prize.

The Ypsilanti Town Recreation Department is hosting its first annual cornhole tournament on Aug 27 on 2025 E Clark Road in Ypsilanti. The game will go from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. There is a $50 registration fee per team willing to play, and anyone else can attend the tournament to watch at no cost to them.

Cornhole is a very popular lawn game many people worldwide play. The game has been recognized by ESPN, Fox Sports, and other cable sports channels.

The Ypsilanti Town Recreation Department also has its cornhole league, where they meet weekly. They received a grant from DTE Energy to purchase better-quality boards and bags for their league, and they want to promote their new equipment and league to the community by hosting the first annual cornhole tournament.

There will be cash prizes for the top three teams, and 60 percent of every registration fee will be for the cash prizes. The tournament will have a limit of 32 teams. They will also be holding an Airmail competition 50/50 where anyone can purchase a ticket for a chance to win some of the prize money. Every ticket will give you a chance to toss up four bags. The ticket prices for the Airmail 50/50 are one ticket for $5 or three tickets for $10. There will also be a Lucky Beez food truck available for everyone.

“Our hope is that the tournament takes off and we will be able to offer our tournament on a yearly basis, expanding from our current 32 teams to make it bigger and better every year,” Josh Kugler, a Recreation Coordinator at the Ypsilanti Town Recreation Department, said. “My hope is that the tournament grows in the future and we are able to offer door prizes to other teams as part of the tournament.”

Every team who wants to participate may choose their partners and bring their bags as long as they’re stamped with a 2020 or newer ACL or ACO stamp. Bags will also be available for anyone who doesn’t have bags at each set of boards. There will be up to 8 games simultaneously, with each game playing up to 21 points and a 30-minute time limit.

The Ypsilanti Town Recreation Department doesn’t only host cornhole tournaments. In addition, Ypsilanti Township hosts a Jazz Festival every Friday night at Ford Lake Park from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The cost per vehicle is $5. Furthermore, their Jump-a-Rama programs will host three parent nights this fall: a back-to-school Bash on Sept. 23, a  Halloween Spooktacular on Oct. 2, and a Christmas Shopping Party on Dec. 3. All three events go from 5:30 p.m-8:30 p.m.

Anyone interested in signing up for the cornhole tournament can register on the Ypsilanti Town Rec website under the adult leagues tab or through the ScoreHolio app by searching for “1st Annual Ypsilanti Township Tournament”.
