Eastern Michigan University joins Nain Rouge Brewery for student training program

EMU's partners with Midtown Detroit, Inc. and Nain Rouge Brewing School for a 12 week program.

Eastern Michigan University has a new partnership with Midtown Detroit and Nain Rouge Brewery for a program for students interested in the brewing industry.

This collaboration between EMU professors Cory Emal and Gregg Wilmes, Midtown Detroit, Inc., Smith & Co., and Nain Rouge Brewery allowed for a 12-week training program for students interested in learning about the brewing industry.

Participants in this class only needed to have earned a high school degree or GED to apply and get selected to join the program.

The program runs twice yearly, once in the spring and again in the fall. Applications for the next 12-week program beginning in September are being accepted now.

Midtown Detroit helped with marketing and funding, while outside sources fund the brewery program.

While there is no specific scholarship funding available as of now, the hope is for students to continue their education at EMU and gain a deeper understanding of the science elements that are taught in this 12-week training program.

“There is a sliding fee to attend depending on income level,” Sue Mosey from Midtown Detroit, Inc said.

The program plan for this collaboration started in 2017. Jon Carlson from 3Mission had the idea to start a brewery and restaurant that had training opportunities for underrepresented groups in the brewing industry.

EMU was happy to join the collaboration as helping underrepresented groups is a goal of the school on on-campus programs. EMU provides students with training in brewing science while 3Mission provides hands-on internships to program participants.

“EMU's role was to provide a curriculum for in-depth scientific training as it relates to brewing science, and 3Mission would provide the hands-on internships in their businesses, in cooperation with Midtown Detroit, Inc (who also helps with logistics, marketing, funding, and similar aspects),” said Emal. “After 5 years of planning and delays, largely due to COVID, our first cohort of students started in April 2022.”
