EMU baseball defeats Alma 5-1 at Comerica Park

Senior Taylor Hopkins hit two home runs to led the Eagles past the Scots

The Eastern Michigan University mens’ baseball team (16-24, 10-14 Mid-American Conference) battled against the mens’ Alma College baseball team at Comerica Park on Wednesday, April 27, 2022.

The Eagles came away with the win, topping Alma 5-1. It was the 48th meeting all-time between the two, as EMU leads the series 38-10.

The Eagles were the first to get on the board, as Hopkins hit a solo home run in the third inning. Later that inning, junior Matt Kirk recorded an RBI single to bring in senior Eli Gora for the score.

Through the sixth inning, Alma failed to put a run on the board. The Eagles dominance continued, recording three more runs in the frame. Hopkins hit his second home run of the night, a two-run shot, to bring the score to 5-0.

Alma would put up one run on the scoreboard before the conclusion, as EMU came out with the win, 5-1.

Starting on the mound for the Eagles was sophomore Nick Chittum. Chittum earned his first career win for EMU as he pitched five shutout innings while giving up three hits, allowing three walks and striking out five.

At the plate, Hopkins went 3-for-4 with two home runs, three RBI’s, a single, and a stolen base. Junior Matt Kirk contributed for the Eagles, going 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI. Senior Shane Easter went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Next up, the Eagles will host Bowling Green State University in a four-game series, inside Oestrike Stadium on April 29, through May 1, 2022.
