Newlyn Stephenson joins top five throwers in EMU's record book at the Tennessee Relays

EMU saw performances from throwers and jumpers in Knoxville, Tenn.

The Eastern Michigan University track & field team competed at the Tennessee Relays on April 7 through April 9 at Tom Black Track at LaPorte Stadium.

On the first day, junior Newlyn Stephenson and sophomore Miranda Cadwell highlighted the day, both achieving top-10 performances for the program. Stephenson threw a personal-best throw of 64.36m, topping his previous record of 63.97m. The performance put Stephenson in the top five of the EMU track and field record books, surpassing former Eagle Keith Williams. 

Meanwhile, Cadwell also saw a personal-best as she threw 51.17m to place herself at sixth all-time in the EMU record books. Senior Kadian Clarke also performed, where she tossed a 56.59-meter throw to finish ninth overall in the competition. 

On day two in Knoxville, Tenn., seniors Kadian Clarke and Chukwusom Enekwechi highlighted the day where they competed in shot put. Clarke would finish seventh in women's shot put, where she threw a 13.90m throw, while Enekwechi finished eighth in the men's shot put with a 16.54m throw. 

Cadwell also competed in the women's shot put, where she produced a throw of 12.65m to place fourteenth. 

Senior Joe Duff competed in the javelin throw, while fellow classmate Dahndray Holmes competed in the long jump. Duff would finish eleventh with a 49.27m throw, while Holmes finished in thirteenth with a 6.42m jump. 

On day three, the Eagles saw some production from triple jump and discus performers. 

Cadwell produced a discus throw of 45.58m, which was just .08 meters away from tying the school record, according to EMU athletics. Clarke would also perform in the women's shot put where she tossed a 39.30m for sixteenth place.  

Meanwhile, senior Alisha St. Louis saw a season-best triple jump of 11.76m to place fifth. While Holmes showed out in the men's triple jump, finishing with a 14.27m jump for fourth place. 

Next up, the Eagles’ distance runners will head to California for Azusa Pacific University’s Bryan Clay Invitational, April 13 through April 15. Meanwhile, other members of the EMU track & field team will be competing at the Don Kleinow Invitational on April 14, hosted by Siena Heights University.
