Opinion: Michigan Avenue Tattoo and Piercing

If you’re looking to get a new tattoo or piercing, consider Michigan Avenue Tattoo and Piercing in Ypsilanti.

If you’re looking to get a tattoo or piercing, consider making an appointment at Michigan Avenue Tattoo and Piercing in Ypsilanti.

The process of making an appointment is super easy, as you can either call the shop or fill out a form on their website. Their site includes portfolios and prices for all of their artists, which is extremely helpful when trying to pick out who you’d like to work with.

The staff is also very friendly, flexible, and helpful. The two employees I spoke to when making appointments always seemed very genuine and happy to help.

I’ve personally gotten work done by two of the staff members—Tylor and Krista. Tylor did two piercings for me. He was super supportive through the process, as I was pretty nervous. He was patient, working as fast and painless as possible. He told me I looked and did great. Krista worked very hard to make sure the tattoo was exactly how I wanted, redrawing it and replacing the stencil. She was super nice during the process, checking in regularly and making sure I was comfortable. She even put on Netflix for me, funnily.

Side note: there is also a female presenting piercer, Joy, and male presenting tattoo artists if this makes you more comfortable.

After my tattoo appointment, Krista also checked in, making sure I was okay with her Instagram post of my tattoo and thanking me for coming in. They were also both available to answer any questions I had about the healing process and after care.

The service is well worth the price. You can find all their pricing for piercings on their website. For high pricing, they even include explanations as to why it is priced that way, so you never feel like they’re pulling the wool over your eyes.

Krista has her hourly rate for tattoos as well as her required deposit listed. The other artists, Rob and Ryan, have their deposits, but they price by piece.

Of course, don’t just take my word for it. The shop has an impressive 4.8 stars on it’s Google review.

“I wish I could give more than 5 stars! Krista did a beautiful job on my tattoo. She is amazingly talented. She used so many colors to get the look I wanted and it turned out perfectly! You can see the skill that went into it. Joy, the owner, and Ryan, another tattoo artist, were both so friendly and funny! The three of them made the experience fun and memorable. This shop has a great vibe and I’ll definitely be back.” says Shawna on her Google review.

Out of curiosity I even spent some time looking at the negative reviews, just to see what they would say. I was very pleased to find that the owner, Joy, personally responds to a lot of reviews, apologizing for bad experiences and clarifying misinformation. It’s always done very respectfully and tastefully.

Next time you’re looking to get a new body modification, whether it be a simple lobe piercing or a full back piece, I highly suggest checking out Michigan Avenue Tattoo and Piercing. I had an 11/10 experience, and according to their reviews, so did many others. Even if you aren’t actively seeking an artist right now, it would be awesome if you could check out their Instagram and show support.
