A corrections officer at the Washtenaw County jail was assaulted in the jail's medical unit on Wednesday, March 9, around 5 p.m.
The officer is in stable condition and is receiving treatment at a local hospital.
The individual responsible for the assault was transferred to a different facility, and the Michigan State Police have been requested to conduct an investigation.
The Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office said corrections, police, and dispatch services handled the situation effectively and professionally.
“This incident is a sobering reminder of the challenging circumstances and danger that each of the men and women of the police services and corrections profession choose to face in service of their fellow human beings and our communities at large,” Washtenaw County Sheriff Jerry Clayton said in a written statement. “They serve without much fanfare and acknowledgement. As a result, Washtenaw County is a better place live.”
The Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office will provide updates on the officer’s condition as appropriate.
