EMU fraternity partners with the Red Cross to organize blood drives

Alpha Phi Omega collaborates with the American Red Cross to host blood drives at EMU.

Alpha Phi Omega, an Eastern Michigan University fraternity, is collaborating with the Red Cross to host two blood drives at the Student Center in June.

To manage the flow of people at the events, the American Red Cross recommends setting up an appointment for individuals interested in donating blood using sponsor code “EMU.” Donors can also complete their donations quicker by registering for a Rapid Pass.

Donors at the event will receive a t-shirt, coupon for Washtenaw Dairy, and a $20 digital Amazon gift card while supplies last.

The COVID-19 pandemic has created a decline in donors and volunteers. The American Red Cross has emphasized that the organization is facing “the worst blood shortage in over a decade.” The organization has expressed the dire consequences of the blood shortages, such as preventing patients from receiving major surgeries.

“Each pint of blood we collect can help save up to three lives and will touch the lives of so many more,” the American Red Cross said in a written statement.

Since 1881, the American Red Cross has always been on a mission to serve people in need and has become one of the world’s largest humanitarian networks.

They provide essential services such as relief supply distribution, shelter, healthcare, water, and sanitation services. A key service the Red Cross focuses on is the donation of blood and plasma to those in need.

Those interested should be advised that the blood drives may be moved to a later date due to the upcoming weather advisory.

Editor’s note: The dates of the blood drives were moved from February to June due to inclement weather.
