Eastern Michigan University womens’ basketball defeated by Buffalo 69-62

Areanna Combs holds the highest double-digit scoring efforts percentage in the Mid-American Conference

Eastern Michigan University womens’ basketball (5-12, 2-8 MAC) hosted the University at Buffalo (13-7,7-3 MAC) this week at the George Gervin GameAbove.

The Bulls took control from the jump ending the first quarter up 18-6 against the Eagles. They continued to lead throughout the game, and went into halftime leading 34-20. 

The Eagles were able to score 26 points during the third-quarter against Buffalo. Eastern Michigan Athletics reported that this is the fourth time this season the Eagles have scored 25+ points in a single period. 

After trying to close the gap with only 19 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Eastern Michigan came up short 69-62. The recent result for the Eagles records the sixth consecutive loss to the Bulls.

Areanna Combs scored 24 points against the Bulls. In 58 of her 61 appearances at Eastern Michigan University, Combs has recorded double-digit scoring efforts (95.1%), ranking as the highest percentage in the Mid-American Conference. Combs also had 11 rebounds, and six assists. This season she has finished four games with at least five assists.

Combs tallied six steals against Buffalo, recording her fourth-straight game with at least three steals according to EMU Athletics. Collectively, the team recorded 12 steals, which ties for the third-most by the Eagles so far this season. 

Zaniya Nelson scored 11 points and a career-high six rebounds. Nelson’s effort on the glass contributed to the Eagles' ability to out-rebound the Bulls, 48-44. 

On offense EMU grabbed 26 of the 48 rebounds against Buffalo. Ce'Nara Skanes contributed to EMU’s 26 rebounds with seven of her own.

Additionally, the Eagles forced the Bulls into 22 turnovers which ties for the second-most the team has forced in a game this season. 

Eastern Michigan University womens’ basketball will remain at home to host Kent State University, Saturday, Feb. 5 at 2 pm. The Eagles will be back on the road Feb.9 to face University at Buffalo again at 7pm.
