I'm a huge Spider-Man and Marvel fan in general, so I’ve been waiting for this movie for awhile. After seeing the trailers with all the characters and themes involved it made me even more excited for this film. Like all of my reviews, there will be some spoilers and plot points discussed, so reader beware. Buckle up and get ready to examine "Spider-Man: No Way Home."
Synopsis
After Spider-Man's real identity being revealed at the end of “Far From Home," Peter must now grapple with the world knowing who he is. Will everyone root for Spider-Man or wish for his demise? Will he be able to right his wrongs with help or make everything worse?
What I loved
The cast of characters presented in this movie was astounding, as the movie tied together many great personalities from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, to create something amazing. I think they did an awesome job bringing all these special personalities into the film and opening up more pathways for the MCU.
The movie was hilarious, I found myself laughing throughout the whole film. I personally feel like all the jokes hit exactly how they were meant to, and if you're a Marvel film fan I think you’ll really enjoy the humor as well. Spider-Man (especially Tom Hollands Spider-Man) has always been a funny guy, but this movie just brought it to the next level.
In this movie, we really get to see the growth of this version of Spider-Man, which I think is really important to the character. While he’s really just been a kid so far, truly a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, he is now maturing. He must think more about his actions and knows that everything has a consequence.
There are a lot more things I truly loved about this movie, but I don't want to spoil too much, so let me just say this movie is a really good one.
What I didn't love
One downfall in my eyes is the length of the movie. With all of my reviews I always want more (what can I say I’m greedy), but with this movie in particular I felt like I did in fact need more story. What fell a little flat for me was the villain story arcs in general, like I wanted so much more from them. They were just given their standard plotline and not much more. I'm not saying I wanted the movie to be an hour longer, but maybe 30 minutes more just to give a little more oomph to the villains, or maybe cut out some stuff at the beginning.
Going from my last point, I felt like the beginning was dragged out. Like yes, I want to see what the world would be like for Peter when everyone knows he’s Spider-Man, but I feel like there was just a lot more of it than I personally needed.
The only other thing I didn't like in this movie was the music. I felt like it didn't hit as much throughout the movie as it does in a usual Marvel film. This film was very dialogue-heavy from the beginning, so I felt like I couldn't pinpoint the music all that well. It may just be me, but I didn't get much energy from the music compared to the other Spider-Man films. Still, there was some familiar music and sounds we’ve heard before, and I really enjoyed some parts of the soundtrack, but it was not my favorite.
Verdict
Overall I really enjoyed this movie, and I'm very picky because I’ve seen what Spider-Man films (and Marvel in general) in the past have done, so I hold them to a high standard. While this isn't my favorite MCU movie of all time, it was really good.
I give "Spider-Man: No Way Home" a 4.5 out of 5.
