When I first came to Eastern Michigan University as a freshman, I knew nothing and no one! I didn’t even know that I needed textbooks until two days before the semester started. Not to mention, I was shocked when I found out that one of them cost $80! After realizing the expensive nature of textbooks, I soon learned the benefits of buying used textbooks instead. I am pretty sure that I will be purchasing used books the rest of my time in college and you should too!
Buying used textbooks instead of new ones is beneficial in ways that range from personal to global effects.
First of all, it is an effective way to save money. I mean, wouldn’t you prefer to spend that $80 on a pair of Nike shoes or something else that you want or need? For instance, I was able to get one of my textbooks for free from a friend, which ultimately saved me $80.
Buying used textbooks can eventually save the planet by decreasing the number of lost trees. In fact, purchasing used textbooks is just like reducing, reusing, and recycling! New books generate approximately 8.85 pounds of carbon emissions each. Consumers can decrease carbon emissions by about seven pounds by purchasing a used book.
Finally and most importantly, used textbooks can help students save time while studying. As a pre-highlighted word here and a pre-underlined word there might just make the important information stand out easier. If you are lucky enough, it might help in making new friends. For instance, I got to know an amazing girl just because I needed a textbook and she had it!
Do you want to be someone who can help save Earth from the effects of climate change? Do you want to make new friends? Don’t you want to be able to decrease your studying time? Then choose purchasing a used textbook! What are you waiting for? Get a used textbook and save the money for a rainy day.
