Hi, My Name is Pily EP Artwork.jpg

Review: Listen to Pilar Victoria's debut EP "Hi, My Name is Pily!"

With genius lyricism and instrumental talent, this rising star demonstrates great talent on her first project.

Argentine-American artist Pilar Victoria has just released her Debut EP Hi, My Name is Pily! on February 26, a project that showcases the singers array of sound and talent. At just 15 years old, this soft-pop artist’s storytelling ability is out of this world, with bilingual lyrics and a unique take on life as a teenage girl.

“This is a collection of tracks that I wrote over the last couple of years way before quarantine,” Pilar said. “For the most part, all these songs are based on me questioning everything in my life and then overthinking everything. But I promise there are some happy parts too! This is my first EP, so I’m so excited for everyone to hear it.”

Pilar began writing songs at just 12 years old and taught herself how to play ukulele, piano, and guitar; while simultaneously being in school and learning to skateboard. This project, written and produced in her hometown of Houston, Texas, demonstrates Pilar’s strengths when it comes to instruments and songwriting, abilities that progress far beyond her years.

“‘Cuando Me Llamas’ was the first song I wrote completely in Spanish, which is actually my first language,” Pilar said about the track. “The song is about liking someone so much and worrying if they feel the same as you.”

The highly-awaited six track project includes previously released singles including, “Space Song,” “I Left A Party For You,” and “80’s Movie,” as well as her first ever Spanish language song “Cuando Me Llamas.” Additionally, the project is produced by Jacob Manson, who has worked with stars such as Jason Derulo and Louis Tomlinson in the past.

For being such a young and new star, her accomplishments are already vast and super impressive.Throughout the past two years, Pilar has crafted an array of beautiful songs and gained over 2 million streams on Spotify alone.

In fall of last year, she released “I Left A  Party For You,” garnering rave reviews from a plethora of news outlets.

“Pilar Victoria is only 14 years old, and she’s already making more accomplished songs than most indie bands achieve in their lifetimes,” stated Billboard. The song has also been featured on a number of the most prominent playlists and been spun by Zane Lowe on his Apple Music radio show.

“Fling myself onto the bed / They say don’t worry your pretty little head / Hurting feelings / Still a little sore / But it’s full-on forgiveness for the boy next door,” she sings on track 80’s Movie.

With relatable lyrics and an extremely soft, soothing voice, Pilar’s music is perfect for anyone, whether you are in a mood of happiness or melancholy. Still, there could definitely be more versatility and I would love to hear more experimental work from Pilar later on.

While there is room to grow of course for this young musician, this is a great first project demonstrating tremendous potential. I am excited to hear Pilar Victoria thrive as an artist and an individual in future years, and hope that you will check out and support her work along with me.

I give this project 3.5 out of 5 Swoops.
