Opinion: Demi Lovato brings an important message on her single, "Commander In Chief."

Demi's lyrics directed at the President show that people of all backgrounds have been tremendously affected by this so called leaders actions.

Throughout the past few weeks, Demi Lovato has gone through a very public breakup that some speculated was a PR stunt, her ex-fiancé included. While the truth is unclear, the singer’s newly released single is sure to leave that situation in the shadows.

The politically charged track, titled “Commander In Chief,” discusses the hardships that people have been dealing with throughout this extremely hard year and presidency.

“I'm not the only one / That's been affected and resented every story you've spun / And I'm a lucky one / 'Cause there are people worse off that have suffered enough,” Lovato belts.

The lyrics are all obviously directed at The United States President, Donald Trump, and question his decisions that have led to immense pain for millions of people. The tracks official video captures individuals of every race, age, and different walks of life singing the heartfelt words along with her.

“Commander in Chief, honestly / If I did the things you do / I couldn't sleep, seriously / Do you even know the truth? / We're in a state of crisis, people are dyin' / While you line your pockets deep / Commander in Chief, how does it feel to still / Be able to breathe?.”

Not only has a global pandemic been handled horribly by our government, causing hundreds of thousands of people to lose their lives, but the president has created even more additional hardships and setbacks to the living as well.

Lovato’s soulful voice brings great emotion to the tear-jerking words and message behind the song. The singer/songwriter even performed the track on the Billboard Music Awards. The visual demonstrates that the president’s actions have affected not just one group of people, but many.

“Won’t give up, stand our ground / We’ll be in the streets while you’re bunkering down,” Lovato sings.

This single is especially important right now, when millions are getting ready to vote for the next president. Hopefully this release shows people how serious this election is, as well as how Trump has hurt our country rather than helped it.

After moving through the line of diverse people singing the song, the video finally comes to Lovato who is clearly hurt and shedding tears. At the very end, she leaves the world with one last super important message: “VOTE.”

“Commander In Chief,” was produced by the super talented FINNEAS, who stated the following in an Instagram post about the project, “I think people underestimate the bravery it takes to put out a song like this when your platform is as large as Demi’s is. But I’m sure if you asked her, she’d tell you it was her responsibility. It was an Honor to produce this one for the wildly talented Demi Lovato.”

This song is way bigger than who you normally listen to or what genre of music you like: it’s a piece of history that will be timeless after this whirlwind of a year. Lovato was not only able to create a beautiful song, but relay a much needed message too. Her talent and passion truly shine bright through this work of art.

Whoever you are, I think it is important for you to hear this at least once, so you can truly feel and think about our country's current emotional state.

I give this release 4.5 out of 5 Swoops.
